Duties and Responsibilities
The Health and Physical Education Teacher provides instruction to deaf, hard-of-hearing, and/or language-delayed students. The teacher creates a positive, respectful learning environment and delivers a health and physical education curriculum that aligns with academic standards, IEP goals, and the mission of the Rhode Island School for the Deaf. The teacher promotes student achievement, physical well-being, and lifelong healthy habits through rigorous, relevant, and inclusive instruction.
Daily Expectations
Create and deliver a health and physical education curriculum that establishes and maintains a positive learning climate incorporating rigor and relevance
Plan, develop, and implement lesson plans and provide instruction for individual students, small groups, and remedial instruction to meet identified student needs
Assess student learning using a variety of appropriate formal and informal assessment methods
Use assessment data to inform instructional planning and instructional adjustments
Apply best practices in curriculum, instruction, and assessment to support and extend student learning
Prepare, administer, and correct examinations; proctor assessments; and provide substitute services as assigned
Participate in the IEP process as required
Manage daily recording and publishing of student attendance and grades using the school platform
Participate in customary conferences with students and parents and provide individual guidance to students
Serve on school committees as assigned
Participate in professional development activities to remain current in assigned teaching fields, instructional practices, and remote learning delivery
Attend professional development activities as mandated by the Principal
Provide synchronous and asynchronous remote learning instruction when directed or per teaching assignment
Use student data to inform decision-making, develop and modify curriculum, and implement targeted and differentiated instruction, including interventions and enrichment
Implement school-adopted curricular resources
Assist with the creation, completion, and presentation of required school and district reports
Determine curricular, assessment, and instructional resource needs and communicate ordering needs
Communicate school and district programs, policies, and procedures to students, staff, parents, and the community as directed
Perform other related duties as assigned to support the effective functioning of the school
