Job Title:           Diesel Mechanic I
Department:     Vehicle Maintenance
Reports To:       Automotive  Supervisor
Grade:               323G
Shift:                Mon-Fri 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM Days Off: Sat & Sun


SUMMARY:    Performs inspection, maintenance, and repair of Rhode Island Airport Corporation (RIAC) fleet vehicles and equipment, including diesel trucks, generators, small engines, and airfield support equipment. Ensures operational readiness to support airport safety, compliance with 14 CFR Part 139, and continuity of operations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following.
•    Perform repairs and preventative maintenance activities on RIAC’s fleet of vehicles, heavy machinery, and equipment across the six airports. 
•    Perform emergency and on-site repairs across airport properties, including roadside service as required. Operates vehicles for snow removal and sanding operations to maintain safe airfield and roadway conditions. Performs snow removal activities during snow events. 
•    Review and maintain working knowledge of newly acquired vehicles and equipment, including operating and maintenance requirements.
•    Perform basic welding and fabrication tasks.
•    Adjust and repair truck body and lifts.
•    Generate documentation for initiating and tracking work orders, including parts pricing, labor, procurement, and completion.
•    Review invoice documents for accuracy, scope, and appropriateness of work performed by external vendors.
•    Coordinates maintenance appointments with internal and external customers. 
•     Maintain inventory of parts and supplies, including tracking usage and initiating reorders.
•    Perform inspection, maintenance, and repair of emergency generators. 
•    Complete daily maintenance reports, work logs, and other required documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
•    Other related duties may be assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. •    Prior experience maintaining and repairing heavy-duty diesel vehicles, fleet equipment, or airport ground support equipment.
•    Experience operating snow removal equipment (e.g., plows, sanders) preferred.
•    Familiarity with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) or work order tracking systems.
•    Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and diagnostic equipment outputs.
•    Strong organizational and documentation skills, including experience completing maintenance and compliance reports.
•    Proficient with Microsoft office suite, or ability to learn.
•    Must pass a required background check for security credentials which must be maintained as a condition of continued employment. 
•    Must maintain a valid drivers license and remain insurable which must be maintained as a condition of continued employment.
•    Ability to obtain and maintain Movement Area authorization which must be maintained as a condition of continued employment.
•    Required to work overtime during call-ins, emergencies, and snow events.


EDUCATION    and/or    EXPERIENCE:    
•    High    school    diploma    or    recognized    GED equivalency and completion of a vocation or trade school course in the field of diesel truck repair and maintenance. 
•    Experience gained through employment as a general diesel mechanic for a construction company, trucking fleet operation, or provider of diesel truck equipment repair services. 
•    Or any combination of education and experience that shall be substantially equivalent to the above education and experience.

•    Regular use of hands for handling, gripping, fingering, and reaching; frequent use of hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment requiring manual dexterity and grip strength.

•    Standing and walking for extended periods; frequent bending and repetitive motion throughout the work shift.
•    Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and push, pull, or maneuver heavy equipment and components.
•    Ability to work in confined spaces and in awkward or constrained positions for extended periods.
•    Ability to climb ladders and safely access elevated equipment and work areas.
•    Ability to work in varying lighting conditions, including low visibility environments.
•    Vision requirements include color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
•    Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including respirators, hearing protection, and protective clothing.

•    Regular exposure to moving mechanical parts, fumes, airborne particles, and hazardous chemicals.
•    Frequent exposure to outdoor weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, wind, and precipitation.
•    Exposure to fuel, lubricants, de-icing fluids, and other aviation-related chemicals.
•    Work performed in active airport operational areas requiring strict adherence to safety and security protocols.
•    Moderate to high noise levels depending on equipment in operation.
•    Exposure to vibration from tools and heavy equipment.
•    Work may involve emergency response, including snow removal and severe weather operations.
•    Potential for irregular or extended hours during operational emergencies or inclement weather events.
