Controller

RFK Community Alliance seeks a Controller to join our Finance team in Lancaster, MA.

Who We Seek 

The Controller is responsible for leading the organization’s core accounting functions, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting, maintaining internal control structures, and supporting audit and compliance functions. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the Controller provides oversight of accounting operations including the general ledger, accounts payable, payroll, fixed assets, lease accounting, and cash management. This role collaborates closely with the AVP of Finance to support budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis. The Controller also supports organizational leadership by delivering accurate financial data, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, and maintaining robust internal controls.

Key Responsibilities

· Oversee daily accounting operations, including accounts payable, payroll, credit card management, and general ledger maintenance.

· Manage the monthly and year-end close processes, including journal entries, balance sheet reconciliations, and ledger review.

· Ensure accurate classification and recording of transactions across cost centers and funding sources.

· Prepare and supervise the production of timely, accurate monthly internal financial reports for department heads and senior leadership.

· Maintain and monitor fixed asset schedules, depreciation, and lease amortization in compliance with ASC 842.

· Account for and reconcile endowment and investment activity in accordance with policies approved by the Finance Committee and Board.

· Oversee cash management activities, including short-term and long-term cash flow forecasting to support operational and strategic planning.

· Ensure compliance with GAAP, IRS regulations, and nonprofit accounting standards.

· Coordinate and prepare all information, reports, schedules, analysis, etc. required for the timely and efficient completion of the annual audits (financial and 403(b)), tax returns, Form 990, Uniform Financial Report (UFR), and other required filings.

· Supervise and develop finance staff responsible for transactional accounting, ensuring effective performance and professional growth.

· Work closely and collaboratively with the CFO and AVP of Finance to ensure that expectations of the finance department are met.

Who You Are 

You hold an MBA with a BA/BS in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. You have 10 years of experience in financial accounting, financial reporting, managerial accounting, and/or controllership. You are proficient in financial systems and Excel with a deep understanding of the accounting and reporting requirements under Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) as they apply to non-profit organizations. You have excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills to engage with executive leadership, auditors, and internal and external stakeholders. You enjoy leading and developing a cross-functional team and driving process improvement. CPA or CMA certification and Dynamics Business Central proficiency are preferred.
