JOB DESCRIPTION

Position:

Driver Education Instructor – Temporary, Certified

 

Reports To:

Reynolds Driver Education Program Manager

 

Compensation:

$32.00/hourly, PERS retirement contribution for already participating employees

 

Summary:

Driver Education Instructors teach and assess students with a valid instruction permit.  Instructors may be assigned to teach behind the wheel driving lessons or teach in a classroom setting.  The program adheres to strict standards and regulations, in accordance with state laws, administrative rules, school district policies, and following an approved driver risk prevention curriculum.  Driving lessons are taught in school district owned vehicles that are equipped with dual instructor brakes and other required safety equipment.  Driving lessons follow planned routes and activities.  Instructor to student ratios:  1 instructor to 2 students in-car, 1 instructor to not more than 30 students in-classroom.

 

Qualifications/Prerequisites:

Great communication skills.  Competence with computer and cell phone use.  Proficiency in creating and maintaining documentation.  Ability to multi-task.  Ability to manage time and adhere to schedules.  Be at least 21 years of age. Complete an approved instructor training program to become certified (Western Oregon University has course offerings throughout Oregon:  https://trafficsafetyoregon.org/schedule-of-courses/becoming-a-driver-ed-instructor/  ).  Maintain valid first aid & CPR certification.  Hold a valid Oregon driver license.  Meet these driving record qualifications:

  • Not more than one driver improvement violation within the preceding 12 months or more than two within the preceding 24 months.
  • No drug or alcohol-related traffic violation, conviction or infraction within the preceding five years.
  • No driver's license suspension, cancellation, revocation or denial within the preceding three years.
  • No conviction for any of the crimes listed in OAR 737-015-0070 (A criminal history check is required before beginning the training program)

Complete a minimum of 15 hours of continuing education every two years. Teach a minimum of 30 hours every two years. Preference will be given to candidates with professional experience working with youth, teaching, or commercial driving.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Teaches and assesses student driving knowledge and skills.
  • Follows lesson plans and routes.
  • Creates and safely maintains impeccable student training records until filed.
  • Communicates by phone, email, text message, and in-person, to coordinate and plan with parents, mentors, students, and staff as necessary.
  • Provides students with constructive feedback in a polite and supportive manner.
  • Engages students in active learning while managing appropriate student behavior.
  • Provides the program manager with desired workload and available workdays & hours, in advance of future course sessions.
  • Follows a routine schedule during each course session, arriving prepared and on time for lessons and meetings.
  • Maintains vehicle interior and exterior cleanliness.
  • Reports vehicle maintenance issues, safety concerns, and incidents to the program manager.
  • Refuels vehicles routinely at the bus maintenance yard.
  • Reports hours worked via timesheet and online portal by the 1st and 15th of each month.
  • Maintains individual instructor certification/re-certification, first aid/CPR certification, and provides these records to the program manager.
  • Will never be under the influence of any intoxicating substance beginning or during work.
  • Instructors strictly adhere to all state laws, regulations, administrative rules, and policies regulating driver education.
