SUMMARY OF FUNCTIONS
The Boiler Dry Kiln Supervisor is a key management role responsible for overseeing all operations related to boilers, dry kilns, and yard activities. This position leads a team, focused on safety, quality, and productivity while executing company plans in coordination with the Plant Operations Manager. The Supervisor ensures the efficient drying of quality lumber in a safe environment, controls costs, and fosters employee development.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead, motivate, and develop team members to ensure high performance
- Promote and enforce workplace safety standards and practices
- Review and interpret production schedules, work orders, and reports to ensure production targets are met
- Monitor and ensure compliance with safety and environmental regulations
- Optimize thermal unit performance for efficiency and minimal emissions
- Maintain and update documentation for thermal energy and lumber drying systems
- Manage inventory for chemicals and rough lumber within the department
- Develop and maintain work schedules and production sequences to achieve output goals
- Conduct workplace practice audits, daily quality checks, and product testing
- Inspect materials and equipment to identify defects or malfunctions
- Train and certify forklift operators, onboard and mentor new employees
- Monitor equipment and operations to ensure standards are consistently met
- Manage departmental expenses and track progress toward production goals
- Participate in and lead action planning initiatives
- Enforce company policies, including disciplinary procedures
- Provide timely performance feedback and document evaluations
- Monitor work hours and manage overtime effectively
- Address employee concerns and collaborate with management to resolve issues
- Conduct regular team meetings and participate in cross-departmental coordination
- Work with HR on staffing and job assignments
- Oversee maintenance and operation of yard machinery, including boilers, dry kilns, forklifts, vehicles, and sheds
- Perform other related yard functions as needed
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Prior supervisory or management experience, or equivalent education
- Solid understanding of lumber manufacturing processes
- Proficient in computer and software applications
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities
- Technical knowledge of boilers, dry kilns, and yard equipment, including repair and maintenance
- Effective communicator across all levels of the organization
- Proven leadership and team collaboration skills
- Ability to train others in equipment operation and safety procedures
- Skilled in performance evaluation and improvement strategies
- Excellent time management and organizational skills
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Perform tasks such as walking, climbing, or standing for long periods of time
- Able to bend, stoop, stretch, twist, or reach with body, arms, and/or legs
- Ability to work outside in all conditions
- Ability to operate safely in day or night-time conditions
- Must be comfortable working around loud equipment
- Able to work while in a fall protection harness at heights over 4 feet
- Able to lift 50 lbs throughout work shift
SAFETY
- Must be able to follow all safety rules and regulations
- Wear all required personal protective equipment, i.e., hardhat, safety glasses, hearing protection, and reflective wear
- Report immediately all accidents, near-misses, property damage, equipment damage, or unsafe conditions
- Use proper lifting technique at all times
