About the Role

This is a software engineering role first, wrapped around a product that lives and breathes wireless connectivity. You'll own and extend a mature, multi-product codebase — a Java service bus, LAMP-stack web portals and API facades, a billing/proration engine, and a reporting layer — while also being the technical point of contact for the carriers we integrate with and the customers who run on the platform. The right person writes the code, ships it across our products, diagnoses what breaks, and can then explain the outcome clearly to a non-technical customer. There is significant personal ownership across the stack.

What You'll Do

Code (the core of the role)

Service bus & integrations (Java). Build and maintain the Java service bus that drives carrier provisioning and cross-system integrations. Develop new carrier/customer integrations and enhancements against it.

Web portals & API facade (LAMP). Develop and support the customer self-care web portal and the API facade — PHP, Apache, MySQL — including the export and data-handling paths that back them.

Billing & provisioning logic. Work in the billing engine where correctness is unforgiving — proration math, money handling (e.g. decimal/accumulator logic), subscription and line-state transitions. Read existing logic carefully, reproduce reported issues, and fix subtle bugs (in-place mutation, edge-case proration, off-by-one cycle math).

Reporting (SQL JasperReports). Write and tune complex SQL against a large proprietary schema (device, usage, provisioning, account/service-data tables); build and optimize Jasper/iReport reports, including memory and performance work (virtualizers, query refactors, streaming exports).

Operate the codebase. Perforce version control across a trunk per-product substreams model (~7 products), Docker-built/-deployed services, and CI/CD pipelines feeding multiple servers. Comfortable in Unix/Linux for builds, scripting, and troubleshooting.

Carrier Operations

Manage the SIM lifecycle across carrier platforms (Verizon/ThingSpace, AT&T, and others) — activations, deactivations, suspends, moves, and subscription changes — and understand how integration status and billing state interact. Diagnose carrier-side problems (e.g. API outages producing unconfirmed ERROR states), reconcile RevX records against carrier dumps and rolling provisioning history, and trace a line's full history through the system. General cellular/SIM-provisioning knowledge is what's needed day to day; deep GSMA/NB-IoT/device-certification expertise is not.

Customer Conversations

Own support tickets end to end, gather requirements for onboarding and enhancements, and translate ambiguous technical states into clear, accurate answers for operations-level customers — including telling a customer when the number they've asked for wouldn't be accurate and proposing what would. Handle sensitive coordination (data exports, migrations, offboarding) with sound judgment about scope and liability.

What We're Looking For

A capable engineer with 3-10 years experience who is comfortable across multiple languages and an existing codebase: Java, PHP (LAMP), and strong SQL, with Apache/MySQL, Unix/Linux, Docker, and a version-control discipline (Perforce a plus).

Ability to read and safely modify production billing/financial logic — precision matters.

Reporting experience (JasperReports/iReport or similar) and the instinct to optimize for performance and memory.

General cellular/IoT and SIM-provisioning familiarity, or the ability to ramp quickly.

Strong written and oral communication skills — able to make a messy technical state understandable to a non-engineer.

Self-starting; thrives in a small-team, wears-many-hats remote environment.

Note

• This consolidates work that has historically lived with one deeply cross-functional engineer. It is genuinely development-heavy — most of the work is writing and maintaining code — but also spans carrier operations and customer-facing support. That breadth and ownership is the appeal for the right person, not a footnote.
