Role Description
This is a full-time, on-site Criminal Defense Attorney role based in Birmingham, AL. The attorney will manage a caseload of criminal matters from initial consultation through resolution, including investigation, legal research, drafting motions, negotiating with prosecutors, and representing clients in court at hearings, trials, and sentencing. Daily responsibilities include meeting with clients, assessing case facts, developing defense strategies, and maintaining clear, timely communication throughout the representation. The role also involves handling post-conviction relief and may include work on related civil rights and other litigation as needed. The attorney will collaborate with firm staff, adhere to ethical standards, and contribute to the firm’s commitment to tailored, high-quality advocacy.
Travel Requirement: Must be willing to travel across Alabama.
Qualifications
• Candidates should possess strong foundational skills in Law and Criminal Law, with the ability to interpret and apply statutes, case law, and court rules.
• Candidates should possess specialized expertise in Criminal Defense Law and Criminal Defense practice, including courtroom advocacy and plea negotiations.
• Candidates should possess advanced legal research skills to investigate facts, analyze precedent, and support motion practice and trial preparation.
• Active license to practice law in Alabama (or eligibility for prompt admission), with prior criminal defense experience strongly preferred.
• Excellent written and oral advocacy skills, including clear drafting of motions, briefs, and client correspondence, and confident courtroom presentation.
• Strong judgment, ethical integrity, and the ability to handle sensitive matters with discretion and respect for diverse clients.
• Organizational and time-management skills to handle multiple cases, deadlines, and court appearances in a fast-paced environment.
• Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and staff while independently managing case strategy and client communication.
