The North Carolina Department of Revenue is currently seeking a Revenue Tax Auditor I to work out of the Asheville Service Center in the Motor Fuels Section of the Examination Division. The Motor Fuels Section administers and enforces motor fuels tax laws, motor carrier laws, as well as some motor vehicle laws. The Motor Fuels Tax Auditor I examines motor fuels tax returns and records to ensure taxpayer compliance with the Revenue laws of North Carolina, as well as conducts audits for International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) and International Registration Plan (IRP) purposes. It is the responsibility of this position to perform accurate and complete audits of financial books and records of motor fuel suppliers, distributors, and service stations registered with the Excise Tax Division to determine tax compliance with multiple tax schedules. Audits performed will involve the interpretation and application of tax laws to ensure compliance with revenue laws and motor vehicle laws by employing professional auditing and accounting principles and practices in the examination of the taxpayers' records and tax reports. The Tax Auditor I maintains an audit plan, which includes simultaneously selecting audit candidates, scheduling taxpayer interviews, reviewing provided records, and preparing and submitting audit reports for timely review. Audits may be conducted at the taxpayer's place of business; therefore, some overnight and out-of-state travel may be required. A vehicle and a valid driver's license are required due to the travel requirements for this position. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: • Document and maintain audit status and communications within agency databases and systems, documentation logs, and audit templates • Obtain all necessary factual documentation to support audit findings • Plan work in an efficient manner ensuring deadlines are met • Prepare concise work papers and reports that clearly explain the findings resulting from completed examinations • Reconstruct and develop accounting methods that properly reflect fuel transactions in cases where either no records or inadequate records or accounting data is available • Develop MS Excel spreadsheets and MS Word documents • Perform accurate and complete audits of financial books and records of motor fuel suppliers, distributors, service stations and trucking companies registered with the Excise Tax Division (International Fuel Tax Agreement) and the Division of Motor Vehicles (International Registration Plan) to determine tax compliance with multiple tax schedules • Perform audits that will involve the interpretation and application of tax laws to ensure compliance with revenue laws and motor vehicle laws by employing professional auditing and accounting principles and practices in the examination of the taxpayers' records and tax reports • Confer with individuals, company officials and their representatives Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences Basic knowledge of the Internal Revenue Code and Income Tax Basic knowledge of auditing and accounting principles and practices Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Word Basic knowledge of the Internal Revenue Code and Income Tax Recruitment Range: $50,088 - $87,654 Effective July 1, 2025, candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they have the minimum education and experience listed from the class specification. Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Economics, Accounting or related field with at least twelve semester hours of accounting from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Related fields considered are as follows: Administrative Science, Business Law, Business Management, Business Operations, Finance, Financial Management, Public Administration, Public Sector & Government Administration Management, Tax, Tax Law and Trust & Wealth Management.
