Accountant - Junior

Job Summary

The Junior Accountant is responsible for supporting the accounting and financial reporting functions for an assigned portfolio of affordable housing, HUD-subsidized, and market-rate properties. This position performs account reconciliations, prepares and posts journal entries, assists with monthly and year-end financial reporting, supports audits, and provides accounting assistance to property and operations management teams. The Junior Accountant also supports the Accounting Department with routine tasks, special projects, and ad hoc assignments as needed.

Key Responsibilities

80% – Property Accounting Responsibilities (Portfolio of 4–8 Properties)

• Reconcile all subsidiary ledgers, rent rolls, and bank accounts to ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial records.
• Perform monthly bank reconciliations to the general ledger, researching and resolving discrepancies by preparing and posting appropriate adjusting and reconciling journal entries.
• Reconcile intercompany accounts and balances, ensuring transactions are accurately recorded and resolved in a timely manner.
• Reconcile accounts payable subledger balances to the general ledger, investigating and correcting variances as needed.
• Experience using Oracle Fusion: ARC Reconciliation Software or the ability to quickly learn property management and financial accounting systems.
• Prepare and post monthly journal entries.
• Perform month-end close procedures and ensure timely completion of accounting cycles.
• Generate monthly financial statements and supporting schedules.
• Prepare account analyses and financial statement notes.
• Develop monthly property performance analyses for management review.
• Complete year-end financial reporting packages within established deadlines.
• Provide accounting guidance and technical support to property management teams.
• Prepare financial packages and supporting documentation for auditors.
• Coordinate with auditors through completion of annual audit engagements.

20% – Administrative and Special Projects

• Prepare check requests and supporting documentation for property tax payments and other expenditures.
• Monitor loan covenant compliance and submit required financial information.
• Maintain and update financial databases, tracking reports, and accounting schedules.
• Participate in special projects, system implementations, and process improvement initiatives.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands:

• Prolonged periods of sitting and working at a computer.
• Ability to communicate effectively in person, by phone, and electronically.
• Ability to occasionally lift and carry files and office materials up to 20 pounds.
• Manual dexterity sufficient to operate a computer, calculator, and standard office equipment.

Education

• High School Diploma or equivalent required.
• Associate’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field preferred.
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.

Experience

• One (1) years of accounting, bookkeeping, or financial reporting experience preferred.
• Experience with affordable housing, HUD programs, property management accounting, or nonprofit accounting is highly desirable.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Working knowledge of accounting principles and financial reporting practices.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and accounting software applications.
• Good analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills preferred.
• Ability to prepare accurate reconciliations and maintain detailed financial records.
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively with accounting, operations, and property management teams.
• Knowledge of HUD regulations and affordable housing accounting practices is a plus.

Compensation:

Actual base salary considers several factors including but not limited to geography, job-related knowledge, experience, and budget. The start of the salary range is typically associated with the minimum experience required.

The role is considered Full Time non-exempt so will be eligible for overtime pay in accordance with federal and state law. The anticipated base pay range for the position is $26.51- $33.14 per hour.
