Job Summary:

Retina-vitreous Surgeons of Central New York is dedicated to providing highly skilled, state-of-the-art and compassionate care for all of our patients. The physicians actively participate in cutting-edge medical research, developing new retinal treatments that can further improve patients’ vision and patients’ lives.

Prepare patients for treatment and assist physicians in performance of patient exam in accordance with professional standards and medical group policies and procedures. Perform basic and routine vision screening and tests within prescribed protocol to assist physicians in collecting data and measurements to allow the correct diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases and problems. Obtain/update patient medical history.

Ophthalmic technician may be required to travel to one of our satellite offices (Ithaca or Syracuse) on an as needed basis. Travel milage will be reimbursed.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities: (Additional duties may be assigned)

  • Verifies patient by name and date of birth prior to rooming.
  • Responsible for taking health history, documenting medications and diagnosis.
  • Informs patients on what to expect after procedures in office and in the operating room and also educates patients when appropriate on diagnosis and signs and symptoms to be aware of. Maintains patient flow.
  • Obtains chief VA complaint with proper documentation per protocol.
  • Checks vision acuity and intraocular pressure and documents technician work-up in EMR or paper chart, pupillary check, and CVF.
  • Consents patients for procedures in office and operating room.
  • Identifies correct medication and correct eye for injections.
  • Ability to check blood pressure on patients. Informs Clinical Lead when patients are not feeling well or elevated blood pressure or low blood sugar. Takes blood sugar accurately.
  • Cleans speculums when needed per protocol.
  • Ability to assist physicians with imaging and charting as needed.
  • Monitors sharps containers and when full, bags and stores per procedure.
  • Maintains patient safety.
  • Keeps rooms neat, clean, and stocked.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Ophthalmic experience preferred.
  • Three years' related experience and/or training in healthcare; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Equipment, Machines and Software Used:

Medical Equipment: Ability to operate a variety of medical equipment including, but not limited to, visual field machines, OCT and tonopen.

Office Equipment: Computer, printer, photocopier, telephone, fax machine.

Computer Software: Nextech and Outlook

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to perform standard clinical procedures according to established protocols.
  • Ability to communicate with others in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include depth perception, ability to see color, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills to interact with patients, vendors and co-workers in a professional and helpful manner in person or via phone or written correspondence.
  • Knowledge of patient care requirements before and after surgery.
  • Knowledge of sterile procedures.
  • Must be detail-oriented and well organized.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and data files.

Physical and Mental Requirements:

  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, use hands to finger, grasp, handle or feel; and perform repetitive motions of the hands and/or wrists.
  • Ability to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
  • Close mental and visual attention required to perform work dealing primarily with observing patient conditions and reactions, analyzing data and medical information, using a computer terminal, and/or extensive reading.

Environmental Conditions:

Work is performed in a typical medical environment with occasional exposure to infectious diseases/bodily fluids.

Traveling:

Ophthalmic technician may be required to travel to one of our satellite offices (Ithaca or Syracuse) on an as needed basis.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: From $21.00 per hour
