What are the responsibilities and job description for the Ophthalmic Technician/Scribe position at Retina Vision Consultants 360?
Under the general supervision of the office manager, administrative coordinator, and physicians the essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to:
Job functions as an ophthalmic technician:
- Perform intake and document in electronic medical record system including medical and ocular history.
- Measure visual acuity, intraocular pressure, pupil responses, extra ocular movements (and other tests requested by physician).
- Provide ophthalmic support during patient exams and procedures and counsel patients by transmitting physician’s orders, use of drops, medication and answer general questions.
- Prepares and performs imaging and diagnostic testing such as OCT, fundus photography and visual field exams (and others tests requested by physicians).
- Administer eye drops and dilating agents as directed
- Maintains safe, secure, clean, and healthy work environment by establishing and following standards and procedures along with complying with legal regulations.
- Assist with minor procedures, including set up and patient preparation, as well as assistance with patient consent for procedure.
- Support clinic flow by collaborating with physicians and other technicians and performing other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor and executive leadership.
- Communicate with administrative staff to ensure prior authorization approval for medical procedures.
- Assist management in maintenance of supplies, equipment and pharmaceutical inventory.
- Participate in required cross-training and/or company required training (such as HIPAA, Harassment, and standard operating procedures etc.).
- Perform according to company policies and procedures and employee handbook at all times.
- Assist with translation as needed (if applicable).
- Serve as a chaperone during medical visits.
Job functions as a scribe:
- Accurately document the physician’s findings and instructions during exams in a manner that is complete and free from error. Review charts for verification and make corrections as needed in coordination with administrative and physician team.
- Coordinate with front office staff to ensure efficient movement and flow of patients through visit.
- Assist with coding and billing documentation with accurate use of ICD10 and CPT coding in patient charts.
- Accurately documents amendments to patient charts according to practice protocol.
- Serve as a chaperone during medical visits.
Work Environment:
- Frequently adjusts or moves items weighing up to 50 lbs across office for various needs.
- Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as calculator, copy machine, phone.
- This position needs to occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
- Constantly standing, sitting, or walking for prolonged periods; includes bending, stooping, squatting, twisting and reaching.
- Must be able to wear personal protective equipment, such as KN95 masks when necessary.
- Works overtime and weekends as needed.
- Must have sufficient ambulatory ability to move to various locations.
- Must cover front and back office as needed including phone coverage, patient check in and out, and patient scheduling.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s degree or higher preferred
- Previous experience as an ophthalmic technician or medical scribe preferred
- Familiarity with medical terminology
- COA or COT certification (preferred but not required)
- Excellent communication, multitasking skills, and positive attitude
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment
