Responsibilities
Follow all current and future policies and procedures of the department.
Perform basic ocular screening and obtain detailed patient history.
Assist in the efficient movement and flow of patients through sequence and evaluation.
Medically assist the doctor during patient examinations.
Scribe and accurately document findings, diagnoses, and treatment plans for the doctor.
Prepare examination rooms with necessary medications, forms, consents, and educational materials.
Coordinate special testing needs with technicians and surgical needs with surgical counselors.
Create and maintain a sterile environment using proper sterile techniques.
Accurately perform and document:
Confrontation visual fields
Basic pupil evaluation, A/C depth exam, and basic slit lamp exam
Tonopen tonometry
Visual acuity (distance and near) and Near Point of Convergence (NPC)
Basic fundus photography (Macula, Disc, and Diabetic Series)
Demonstrate working knowledge of ophthalmic terminology and equipment.
Assist the doctor with patient calls, pharmacy calls, and ensure all patient phone calls are returned the same day received.
Communicate all doctor instructions to patients and/or other doctors’ offices as directed; fax reports, letters, post-op notes, and other documents to referring physicians.
Travel to all office locations and work with any assigned doctor as needed.
Collaborate with other clinic personnel and departments to ensure continuity of care and smooth clinic operations.
Participate in interdepartmental duties as directed by the clinical supervisor, office manager, or physician.
Maintain practice and patient confidentiality at all times in compliance with HIPAA regulations.
Exhibit professionalism and maintain effective communication at all times.
Participate in staff meetings, educational trainings, and continuing education as required.
Obtain and maintain HIPAA/OSHA certification annually (provided by the practice).
Perform other duties as assigned by leadership.
Skills & Qualifications
High school diploma or GED required.
Minimum of 1 year recent experience in an ophthalmic or medical scribe role.
COA or COT certification preferred.
Excellent communication skills with patients, physicians, and staff.
Ability to exhibit patience, empathy, and compassion with all patient interactions.
Flexibility with work hours and travel to local area offices as needed.
Proficiency in working across multiple software programs and applications simultaneously.
Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
Demonstrated ability to thrive in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
Ability to remain calm, professional, and efficient under pressure.
