Surgical Coordinator responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Receipt of instructions from physicians about which surgery/procedure is to be scheduled
- Timely scheduling of procedures, according to urgency
- Interviewing and counseling of patients pre-operatively regarding health history, pre-operative history and physical, necessary pre-operative testing, as well as pre- and post-operative physical limitations and care instructions
- Coordination of care and preoperative testing with patient’s primary care physician and other treating specialists
- Verification of patient eligibility and insurance coverage and obtaining pre-certification/pre-authorization if necessary
- Scheduling of operating room time according to physicians’ scheduling protocols and preferences
- Submission of all necessary information, surgical orders, medical records, and approved forms to appropriate hospital
- Assisting patient with obtaining any necessary post-operative durable medical equipment
- Coordination and communication of physicians’ surgical and office schedules
- Responding to written and telephone inquiries from physicians, patients, and hospitals
- Maintaining strict patient confidentiality, in compliance with HIPAA guidelines
Ideal Candidates will have the following qualifications/experience:
- Previous patient contact or customer service experience
- Knowledge of electronic medical records system; experience using eClinical Works, Health Nautica, and Availity is highly desirable
- Working knowledge of insurance verification and preauthorization
- Basic knowledge of CPT and ICD-10 coding
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work independently and as a team player
- Strong organizational skills
- Ability to multitask and use critical thinking to complete tasks
- Ability to stay calm while working under pressure
