Retina Ophthalmic Assistant (Trainee)

Winchester, VA | Woodstock, VA | Martinsburg, WV | Full-Time or Part-Time

Retina Associates is seeking a motivated Retina Ophthalmic Assistant (Trainee) to join our retina specialty team. This role is ideal for a professional who is passionate about patient care, clinical excellence, and supporting the diagnosis and treatment of complex retinal diseases. This role is the first step to a full career progression with increased pay and responsibilities.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Prior healthcare, clinical research, medical assisting, or direct patient care experience preferred
  • Strong interest in healthcare, ophthalmology, retina care, or patient care
  • Excellent communication and patient service skills
  • Professional, dependable, and team-oriented attitude

Certification Timeline

  • Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA): Expected within 12 months after hire, once IJCAHPO eligibility requirements are met, including approved study/course requirements and supervised clinical work hours
  • Certified Retina Technician (CRT) or Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT): Expected after advancement to the certified assistant level and once IJCAHPO eligibility requirements are met
  • This is a 12-month time-limited appointment that requires advancement to the next level position. Trainees in this position must complete advancement to COA, COT, or CRT to maintain employment.
  • The practice provides training, mentoring, continuing education support, and certification support for professional advancement.

Responsibilities

  • Perform retina patient workups appropriate to training and experience
  • Support OCT, fundus photography, retinal imaging, and diagnostic testing workflows
  • Assist with patient preparation for examinations, treatments, and in-office procedures
  • Document clinical information in the EMR and support physician documentation workflows
  • Educate patients on testing, procedures, follow-up care, and treatment instructions
  • Maintain accurate records and support efficient patient flow
