General Definition of Work

The teacher residency instructional specialist, under moderate supervision, performs instructional programs support work with limited decision-making discretion supporting new teachers who are a part of the CMS Teaching Residency program to improve teacher efficacy, student learning, and achievement. Position provides support to resident teachers including coaching, grading content coursework, and supporting edTPA portfolio development and submission. Employee performs district-level work to carry out Board of Education policies under the direction of the Residency Supervisor.

Place of Work

The normal place of work is on the premises used by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Charlotte- Mecklenburg Schools reserves the right to require you to work at such other place(s) as it may reasonably require from time to time.

Essential Functions

  • Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures
  • Support Resident Teachers as learners acquiring and building a repertoire of skills to provide personalized learning to meet the needs of every student through non-evaluative observations and coaching feedback sessions
  • Carry out assignments and projects as required by CMS Teacher Residency program leadership
  • Schedule cohort meetings for Resident Teachers throughout the year
  • Conduct webinars to support coursework and edTPA portfolio development
  • Develop and maintain tracking systems for managing Resident Teacher data, coursework, and edTPA deadlines
  • Review coursework modules to understand grading expectations
  • Use rubrics to grade module cycle assignments and provide clear feedback with next steps for resubmissions. Grade all resubmissions of coursework
  • Engage Resident Teachers in professional learning and reflective practices
  • Demonstrate leadership in evaluating, choosing, and modifying a variety of learning strategies, tools, and resources to meet the various needs of all learners
  • Assist and train Resident Teachers to utilize district standards-based short- and long-term curriculum plans and student assessments
  • Collaborate with school administrators and cooperating teachers
  • Support the creation of program materials including PowerPoint presentations, handouts, and talking points for meetings and events
  • Respond to and send e-mails and communication as required by program leadership
  • Prepare, facilitate, and follow-up on all tasks that result from various professional development sessions
  • Develop staffing plans regarding hiring and interviewing to efficiently fill open positions
  • Develop a pool of qualified applicants in advance of need; follow up with direct leads to create a viable pool of instructional candidates for the residency program
  • Develop and maintain a network of contacts to easily identify and source qualified talent through a variety of channels including internet, social networking sites, networking, referrals, job fairs, etc.; initiates contact with possible qualified talent for specific positions via direct sourcing
  • Conduct initial screening of all applicants; conduct prescreening interviews and assist in the interviewing and selection process; assess applicants to ensure qualification match and compatibility to ensure hiring of best possible talent
  • Provide complete and accurate information to candidates about CMS, the onboarding process, and the requirements of our workforce
  • Maintain and tracks measurable applicant and interview data
  • Facilitate professional development and attend other related meetings as needed/required
  • Participate in professional development workshops and leadership training
  • Create an inclusive environment with positive communication
  • Performs related duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the principles, practices, and procedures of public school system policies
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the principles, standards, and expectations of curriculum in assigned area
  • Comprehensive knowledge of staff development practices, procedures, and techniques
  • Comprehensive knowledge on how to utilize appropriate data and information to make instructional decisions for students
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of various learning styles, curriculum development and program evaluation, effective instructional strategies, classroom management, learning assessment and diagnosis, and research related to learning
  • Skilled in the use of current software to include word processing, spreadsheets, and desktop publishing applications
  • Ability to learn and use specialized tools, equipment or software related to business needs
  • Ability to implement local, state, and federal rules, guidelines, and procedures into daily business operations
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Ability to reason, make judgments, and maintain effective working relationships
  • Ability to employ positive communication skills in all settings/mediums
  • Ability to problem-solve utilizing sound judgment
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding school system business
  • Ability to take initiative, work independently, and exercise sound judgement
  • Ability to develop related charts, graphs, reports, and records pertaining to school planning and strategy
  • Ability to conceptualize, initiate, monitor, and evaluate new and/or current programs
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a deadline-driven, rapidly changing team environment

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree required  
  • Valid NC Teaching license required
  • Minimum of five (5) years of successful teaching experience required
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience

Special Requirements

  • Possess and maintain a driver’s license or ability to provide own transportation.
  • Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings
