What a DSP does under Ohio DODD
- A DSP supports individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities to live more independently.
- Duties often include assisting with daily living (eating, bathing, dressing), housekeeping, transportation, community integration, teaching life skills, medication support, etc.
- DSPs must follow Individual Service Plans (ISPs) and adhere to standards and rules under Ohio law and DODD regulations.
Requirements / Qualifications
- Minimum Age - 18 years or older
- Education - High School Diploma or GED
- Valid ID/SSN - Must have a valid social security number and a government-issued driving license and up to date vehicle insurance
- Driving record - Clean driving, must not exceed 6 points
- Background check - Must pass a criminal background check; certain offenses may may disqualify a candidate
- Physical ability - Ability to lift a certain weight (50-75 lbs.) and perform physical tasks
- Training/certification - Must complete DODD training (initial and annual)
Training & Certification
- Ohio requires Initial Training and Annual Training for DSPs, whether agency-employed or independent.
- Training topics include: rights of individuals, safety/emergency procedures, infection control, emergency protocols, person-centered planning, implementation of ISPs, documentation, etc.
- Additional mandatory trainings: CPR / First Aid / AED certifications, medication administration, etc.
