Join RSA and help make library materials easier to discover for our member libraries.
RSA is seeking a detail-oriented, service-focused Bibliographic Services Specialist to join our Bibliographic Services team. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys cataloging, database quality, problem-solving, and helping libraries provide accurate and accessible records for their communities.
In this role, you will perform copy cataloging, support database maintenance projects, and work directly with RSA member libraries on cataloging-related questions and needs. Your work will help maintain a high-quality shared bibliographic database and improve the discoverability of library materials for both library staff and users.
This position is set to begin in January 2027.
What You’ll Do
- Perform copy cataloging of materials in all formats.
- Edit MARC records independently while following RSA cataloging standards.
- Load bibliographic records into RSA’s shared database.
- Assist with database maintenance and collection batch edits to support quality control.
- Participate in in-person and virtual workshops, training sessions, and routine visits to member libraries.
- Help member libraries with strategies, policies, and procedures that affect daily cataloging operations.
- Assist with researching, creating, and maintaining cataloging documentation for RSA staff and member libraries.
- Respond to cataloging questions, troubleshoot issues, and communicate solutions through multiple channels.
- Participate in testing new or upgraded software and assist with related cataloging documentation.
- Collaborate with RSA colleagues, member libraries, library system staff, vendors, and other stakeholders on projects and service improvements.
What We’re Looking For
Required qualifications include:
- Associate’s degree from a Library Technical Assistant (LTA) program with completion of at least one cataloging course; equivalent library work experience will be considered in lieu of an LTA degree.
- 1 years of copy cataloging experience, or recent completion of a cataloging course.
- Basic knowledge of descriptive and subject cataloging practices, Dewey Decimal Classification, Library of Congress subject and genre headings, OCLC Bibliographic Formats and Standards, and MARC.
- Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to concentrate on detailed information for extended periods.
- Ability to communicate clearly, manage shifting priorities, exercise initiative, and work both independently and collaboratively.
Experience that will help you stand out:
- 1 years of customer service experience in a library setting; relevant customer service experience in other settings may also be considered.
- 1 years of experience using integrated library systems (ILS).
- Familiarity with SirsiDynix Symphony.
- 1 years of experience using online public access catalogs (OPACs).
The Person We’re Looking For
You’ll thrive in this position if you enjoy detail-oriented work, care about data quality, and like solving problems for others. You’re comfortable learning and applying cataloging standards, making sound decisions, and knowing when to ask for additional guidance or escalate an issue.
You’ll also bring a service mindset to your work. Building constructive relationships with colleagues and member libraries, communicating clearly, and adapting to changing priorities are important parts of succeeding in this role.
