Field Service Engineer / Field Service Technician (Mechanical Focus)
Job Summary
We travel to industrial facilities to perform onsite inspections of air pollution control equipment, document equipment condition, identify needed repairs, and compile detailed inspection reports. Field Service Engineers / Technicians support customer maintenance teams during execution of work and provide quality control throughout the process.
Most inspections occur during scheduled annual maintenance outages (“shutdowns”) at industrial facilities. Our primary customers are paper mills and power plants, with additional work in refineries, cement plants, sawmills, chemical plants, and sugar mills.
This position is primarily mechanical in nature, with limited electrical responsibilities related to inspection, verification, and basic troubleshooting.
Equipment & Scope of Work
The majority of equipment serviced relates to particulate (dust) collection and removal from industrial boiler exhaust streams, including:
- Electrostatic Precipitators (ESPs)
- Mechanical Dust Collectors
- Baghouses
- Scrubbers
- Fans and Conveyors
- Ductwork and Ash Removal Systems
Key Responsibilities
- Perform detailed mechanical inspections of industrial pollution control equipment
- Document equipment condition through photographs, notes, and measurements
- Identify maintenance and repair needs and communicate findings clearly
- Generate high-quality inspection reports used by customers and internal engineering, estimating, construction, and proposals teams
- Support and observe maintenance and repair work, providing quality control and verification
- Interface directly with customer personnel during outage planning and daily progress meetings
- Represent the company professionally at customer sites
Mechanical Focus
This role emphasizes mechanical inspection and evaluation, including:
- Structural and component condition assessments
- Alignment checks (frames, conveyors, drives)
- Corrosion and wear evaluation
- Welding and fabrication inspection
- Rigging and mechanical system observation
Strong mechanical aptitude is essential.
Electrical Responsibilities (Supporting Skillset)
Field Service Engineers / Technicians are expected to perform basic electrical verification and troubleshooting in support of inspections and diagnostics, including:
- Safe use of multimeters and basic test equipment
- Verifying power, heater, and transformer readings
- Identifying and documenting observed electrical issues
- Supporting troubleshooting efforts as needed
Advanced electrical design, programming, or controls engineering experience is not required. Electrical tasks support the mechanical inspection and reporting process.
Education & Experience
- Field Service Engineer: 4-year engineering degree
- Field Service Technician: 2-year associate degree or equivalent technical experience

Technical & Computer Skills
- Proficiency with Windows-based laptops
- Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
- Ability to write clear, professional reports with strong attention to detail
- AutoCAD experience is a plus; training provided
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work in confined spaces and industrial environments
- Comfortable climbing ladders, scaffolding, stairs, and equipment structures
- Ability to work in hot, cold, dusty, and non-air-conditioned environments
- Willingness to perform hands-on work typical of construction and industrial maintenance sites
Travel Requirements
- Frequent travel to customer facilities throughout the U.S.
- Most sites are within driving distance of Troy, Alabama
- Company vehicle provided (late-model Chevy Silverado)
- Occasional air travel for distant locations
Work Schedule & Seasonality
- Typical outage duration: 4–7 days (some shorter, some up to 2–3 weeks)
- Busy seasons: Spring and Fall (April and October are peak months)
- Slower winter months
- When not on a job, field personnel work from home completing reports and administrative tasks
- Guaranteed 40 hours per week; additional hours paid at straight time
Emergency & After-Hours Support
- Occasional emergency response for critical equipment issues
- Availability for after-hours or weekend calls as needed
- Field Service personnel are the front line for urgent troubleshooting situations
Safety & Compliance
- Pre-employment and site-specific drug testing required
- Strict adherence to safety protocols
- Work involves heavy machinery, high-voltage equipment, and company vehicle operation
Customer Interaction
- Serve as the primary onsite representative of the company
- Communicate clearly and professionally with customer maintenance teams and management
- Present findings, progress updates, and troubleshooting approaches as needed
