The Research Foundation for the State University of New York at Plattsburgh (RF-SUNY) is seeking a qualified candidate with technical and practical skills for the position of Research Technician with The Lake Champlain Research Institute (LCRI) at SUNY Plattsburgh. SUNY Plattsburgh is a regional leader in environmental science and ecology with strong undergraduate and graduate programs. The Lake Champlain Research Institute is a hub for research on campus with many ongoing projects. Job Description
Function and Scope
The Research Technician conducts field and laboratory work to support current and ongoing projects for the Lake Champlain Research Institute to include the Long-Term Monitoring Program, Deep Lake Buoy Research and other ongoing outreach and education programs. Responsibilities include boat-based sampling on Lake Champlain, tributary sampling, and laboratory processing of plankton net samples.
Duties and Responsibilities
· Conduct field data collection, to include limnological methods/plankton sampling, deployment of data buoys.
· Function as team leader for boat-based research to include operating and inspecting the vessel, prioritizing safety, maintaining scientific equipment, and detailed record keeping.
· Participate in laboratory sample analysis including taxonomy/identification of macroinvertebrates, zooplankton and phytoplankton.
· Perform project-specific administrative duties to include management of LCRI lab data sets and preparation of data sets for reports and manuscripts.
Certifications/Licenses
· Valid driver’s license
· Completion of an approved boating safety course (within 30 days of hire)
Education and Skills
B.S. or B.A. in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, or related fields and a minimum of one year of limnology field sampling experience (including boat limnology sampling experience) and experience in field and laboratory settings.
· Ability to work under general supervision, and collaboratively as part of a research team.
· Evidence of taxonomic ability to identify freshwater plankton, including zooplankton and phytoplankton.
· Boat handling (docking, close quarters maneuvering, trailering, and launching) experience.
· Knowledge of marine weather forecasts, navigation and boating safety regulations and laws, and proficient in use of typical marine electronics.
· Strong attention to detail.
· Ability to cope with challenges and adapt to change.
· Experience with Microsoft office suite.

Salary Range
Annual $36,075 --- $40,000 Commensurate with education, qualifications, and field experience.
