What are the responsibilities and job description for the Diesel Mechanic – Heavy Equipment (Field, Home Nightly) position at RES Coal LLC?
Heavy Equipment Field Mechanic
RES Coal mines metallurgical coal — the raw material that goes into making steel, not the thermal coal that fuels power plants. Steelmaking still depends on it, and we've grown steadily since 2008, opening new sites while others shut down.
We're hiring Heavy Equipment Field Mechanics to maintain one of the largest CAT mining fleets in Pennsylvania. Steady year-round work, paid drive time, and a take-home service truck — not a road-construction job that stops when the weather turns.
IS THIS YOU?
This role is a fit if you can say yes to most of these:
✓ You've diagnosed and repaired heavy equipment, diesel, or trucks — not just oil changes, greasing, and tires
✓ You can troubleshoot hydraulic and electrical problems without someone walking you through every step
✓ You own hand tools up to 1/2" drive
✓ You can read and work from schematics and service manuals
✓ You can work safely and independently outdoors in a mining environment
✓ You have a CDL-B, or you're willing to get one
Newer to the trade, or stronger on PMs than diagnostics? Look at our Heavy Equipment Lube Technician posting — it's how several of our mechanics got started.
WHY WORK HERE
- Take-home company service truck — home every night, no overnight travel, paid drive time beyond 30 minutes
- Backed by a full in-house team: lube techs, parts runners, shop mechanics, rebuild specialists, welders, and line-borers
- Privately owned and diversified — stable through tough markets, with year-round work
- Pay moves on skill and performance, not time served — do well and you move up fast
- Cross-train into weld, rebuild, hydraulics, and electrical if you want to grow
In short — we treat our mechanics like professionals, not numbers on a roster.
POSITION OVERVIEW
Diagnose and repair large mining equipment in the field, including major component changeouts (engines, transmissions, finals). You'll be stationed at one or two primary sites and rotate to others as needed, working closely with lube techs, parts runners, and rebuild teams.
