What are the responsibilities and job description for the Substation Engineering Manager position at Requisite Talent Partners?
Substation Engineering Manager | Boise, ID (Hybrid)
THE OPPORTUNITY
Our client is adding a Substation Engineering Manager to lead their Boise office. This is a department leadership role with a real mandate to grow the team — not just manage what's already in place. You'll lead a group of substation design professionals, stay technically engaged with the work, and help build out a growing regional office with strong client demand behind it.
WHAT YOU'LL OWN
- Lead, mentor, and manage a team of engineers, designers, and drafters delivering substation engineering design projects
- Own resource planning, performance management, and professional development for the team
- Build a culture of technical excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement
- Contribute to proposal development, scope definition, cost estimates, schedules, and technical documentation
- Support the team's technical execution throughout project lifecycles
- Coordinate with clients, vendors, contractors, and other stakeholders to ensure timely, accurate delivery
- Monitor project KPIs and quality, and support compliance with safety and operational standards
- Participate in business planning and strategy, including recruiting to grow the Boise team over time
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
- Direct, hands-on substation engineering design experience — candidates with only project management oversight or utility coordination experience will not be a fit
- Meaningful experience leading engineering teams and mentoring technical staff (generally 8 years, including candidates ready to step into their first formal management role)
- Enough technical depth to lead a team through challenging projects and represent the work credibly with clients
- Comfort owning both technical and business responsibilities — budgets, business planning, financial tracking, interviewing, and team development
- An entrepreneurial, growth-oriented mindset — genuinely interested in building a team and scaling an office, not just maintaining one
- Based in or willing to relocate to Boise; this is a hybrid role with a strong in-person expectation, not a remote position
- Bachelor's degree, Electrical Engineering preferred, from an ABET-accredited university
Nice to have: PE license; prior experience managing an engineering department or group (though our client is open to a strong candidate ready to step up into their first management role); experience supporting business development or client-facing proposals in the utility/substation space.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
- Base salary: $158,000–$215,000, dependent on experience, with flexibility for candidates who bring exceptional experience to the role
- Employee ownership
- 401(k) with 4% match and immediate vesting
- Competitive PTO
- Relocation support may be available for the right candidate
Salary : $158,000 - $215,000
