What are the responsibilities and job description for the Preconstruction Estimator position at Republic Services?
POSITION SUMMARY: The Preconstruction Estimator supports the development, coordination, and validation of construction cost estimates for capital projects across the portfolio. The incumbent works closely with the Preconstruction and Design & Construction teams and external consultants to assist in preparing conceptual budgets, detailed take-offs, cost analysis, and bid evaluations. The Preconstruction Estimator will contribute to maintaining estimating standards, improving data accuracy, updating and standardizing cost models, and supporting cost transparency across projects.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist in preparing conceptual (ROM), schematic, and detailed construction cost estimates, developing them into project budgets.
- Perform quantity take‑offs and scope quantification from conceptual through construction‑level drawings.
- Support development and organization of Work Breakdown Structures (WBS) and overall estimate structure.
- Assist in estimating general conditions, indirect costs, owner/developer costs, and applicable markups.
- Interpret Gantt‑style project schedules to align preconstruction and construction timelines with cost impacts.
- Support contractor and owner third‑party trade solicitation, bid leveling, and cost validation processes.
- Maintain historical cost databases, market intelligence, and conduct local labor, material, and equipment research.
- Review engineering and design documents to identify scope gaps, overlaps, and compliance with company standards.
- Track estimate evolution, reconcile estimated versus actual costs, and support trend logs and change tracking.
- Participate in design reviews and assist with executive‑level cost summaries, presentations, pay applications, and change order reviews.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned or apparent.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Foundational knowledge of construction methods, materials, and sequencing.
- Basic understanding of commercial or industrial construction procurement.
- Familiarity with construction drawings and specifications.
- Ability to perform quantity take-offs using digital tools (OST – On Screen Takeoff, Bluebeam, Procore)
- Strong analytical and organizational skills.
- Proficiency in Excel and construction cost estimating software.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work cross-functionally.
- Willingness to travel (typically travel requiring an overnight stay once per quarter).
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- 2 - 4 years of construction estimating, project engineering, or related experience
