Job Summary
The Tube and Core Winding Operator is responsible for safely operating, setting up, and maintaining tube and core winding equipment to produce paperboard tubes and cores that meet customer specifications, quality standards, and production targets. This role requires prior experience with winding equipment, strong mechanical aptitude, and a focus on safety, quality, and efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate tube and core winding machines in accordance with standard operating procedures (SOPs)
- Perform machine setups, changeovers, and adjustments for different sizes, wall thickness, and customer specifications
- Monitor product quality, including diameter, wall thickness, length, and winding integrity
- Inspect finished tubes/cores and remove or report non-conforming material
- Read and interpret production orders, specifications, and work instructions
- Load paperboard, adhesives, and other raw materials as required
- Perform routine preventative maintenance, cleaning, and lubrication of equipment
- Troubleshoot mechanical or process issues and coordinate with maintenance when needed
- Maintain accurate production, scrap, and downtime records
- Follow all safety, housekeeping (5S), and environmental policies
- Assist with training or mentoring less experienced operators
- Work collaboratively with quality, maintenance, and other production personnel
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED (technical or vocational training preferred)
- 1-2 years of experience operating tube and core winding equipment or similar converting machinery
- Working knowledge of paperboard, adhesives, and winding processes
- Ability to use measuring tools (calipers, tape measures, micrometers, etc.)
- Basic mechanical troubleshooting skills
- Ability to read and understand work orders and specifications
- Strong attention to detail and quality standards
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in paper mill, converting, or packaging manufacturing environments
- Familiarity with spiral winding processes
- Experience with lockout/tagout, machine guarding, and industrial safety standards
- Forklift certification or experience (or willingness to be trained)
Physical & Work Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 50 lbs. regularly
- Manual dexterity to perform machine adjustments and inspections
- Ability to work in a manufacturing environment with noise, dust, and moving equipment
- Willingness to work rotating shifts, overtime, weekends, or holidays as required
