What are the responsibilities and job description for the Surgical Technology Instructor / Tenure Track position at Renton Technical College?
This is a full-time, tenure track position that is responsible for instruction and related professional duties in our Surgical Technology program. Teaching assignment may include in-person, online, or hybrid courses. This position is represented by the Renton Federations of Teachers (RFT) union. The salary for this position is $94,503 - $112,865 annually. New hires are initially placed at step one ($94,503) on the salary schedule. This does not include the general wage increase in July. - Support the college's mission by creating a learning environment of mutual respect and fairness, while encouraging creative and critical thinking. Provide leadership in working to improve access and successful educational outcomes for underrepresented student populations.
- Effectively teach the adopted curriculum for the Surgical Technology program.
- Provide for the orderly conduct of program learning activities, individual student learning needs and the appropriate evaluation of student progress towards attaining the learning objectives.
- Develop and update curriculum as required by the College to respond to industry trends and to improve equitable student outcomes.
- Maintain office hours convenient to students.
- Participate in recruiting and job placement activities for students with varied backgrounds and career goals.
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and clinical partners.
- Design inclusive instructional strategies, including classroom, small groups and individualized instruction, to reach all students, and select and evaluate the materials needed to implement these strategies. Develop and administer challenging tests for individual Surgical Technology courses.
- Maintain appropriate individual student records and submit them in a timely manner as required.
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships with program partners and periodically serve on the program advisory committee.
- Create a professional development plan and participate in ongoing improvement activities.
- Develop, collaborate, maintain, and participate in program accreditation.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Dean.
- Experience with persons from diverse backgrounds such as sexual orientation, racial, ethnic, religious, linguistic, gender, age, socio-economic, physical and learning abilities, and a commitment to an inclusive and equitable working / learning environment.
- Associate Degree in Surgical Technology or a related field is preferred. Ability to obtain an associate degree prior to the completion of the tenure process is required.
- Three years of experience as a Certified Surgical Technologist in the operating room or as an instructor in surgical technology within the past five years. A combination of three years of operating room and instructor experience will be considered.
- An interest in innovative curriculum and delivery. Experience using various teaching strategies that address different learning styles.
- Ability to design learning experiences that are interactive and respectful of cultural differences.
- Ability to work effectively and engage with adult learners and individuals whose first language is not English.
- Have taken professional-technical teacher training courses is preferred. Recommend taking professional-technical teacher training courses after initial employment.
- Experience with Canvas (Learning Management System) is preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to promote universal design and accessibility. Proficiency in (or ability to learn within 6 month of hire) the production of accessible content, whether print or electronic.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality, think critically and exercise independent judgment.
- Demonstrated attention to detail required as well as previous experience maintaining accurate records, managing multiple tasks, and planning and organizing work in order to meet changing priorities and deadlines.
- Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills; ability to work professionally and effectively with students, faculty, staff, colleagues and community partners.
- Knowledge of, understanding of, and commitment to the education role and philosophy of the technical college.
- Ability to represent the college in a positive and professional manner, while using tact, discretion and courtesy.
- Ability to speak a regionally top spoken language other than English is preferred (Spanish, Vietnamese, Russian, Somali, and Chinese).
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS, LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:
- Washington State Surgical Technologist Registration Certificate
- National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting Certification (NBSTSA) as a Surgical Technologist.
- Have or acquire within 90 days of initial employment a current First Aid and CPR certification.
- Documentation of current immunization (CDC recommendations) and health requirements within 6 months of hire date is required.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Working hours include instruction Monday – Friday, with evening and weekend work as required. The position is active in nature and requires standing, lecturing and demonstration of processes in a lab environment. Frequent use of a computer and exposure to terminal screens is required. Work and meetings may take place across campus. May drive/travel to trainings, conferences, and/or college events. This is mostly an in-person/on-campus position; remote work may occur as business permits.
