Are you passionate about ensuring a safe, secure, and welcoming environment for a diverse community? Renton Technical College (RTC) is seeking a security professional to join our team. The RTC Security Officer is responsible for maintaining a safe, secure, and welcoming environment for faculty, staff, students, and guests on campus. This position requires demonstrated multicultural competence and a commitment to an inclusive and equitable campus environment. It also requires excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills, along with the ability to work effectively as part of a team. The ability to work independently, self-supervise, demonstrate critical thinking and prioritize tasks is essential.

The Security Officer is represented by the Renton Professional Technical Association (Prof-Tech) union. This is a part-time, classified, and overtime eligible position in the Security Department reporting to the Security Field Supervisor and Director of Safety & Security. Work hours for this position are 6:00am – 2:00pm, on Saturdays. The pay range for this role is $27.63 - $36.67 hourly. Salary placement will not exceed step 10 ($34.79/hour). Additional information can be found in the Collective Bargaining Agreement. The priority consideration date for this position is April 12, 2026. This position will remain open until filled.

  • Patrol campus grounds and offsite locations by foot, and department patrol vehicle.
  • Receive incoming calls with department issued phone while on duty and self-dispatch to alarm calls.
  • Conduct routine security checks of buildings, facilities, and grounds periodically while on duty.
  • Lock and unlock buildings and arm and disarm alarms as needed. 
  • Perform safety and security inspections of AED and other life-safety equipment on a regular basis.
  • Understand and enforce all the rules and regulations for the college.
  • Provide assistance to students, faculty, staff, and visitors as requested. Including but not limited to, assisting with vehicle unlocks, jump start requests, and parking enforcement.
  • Contact Renton Police for trespass notices and escort trespassers from campus when necessary.
  • Provide walking and vehicle escorts for students, faculty, and staff upon request.
  • Wear issued uniform, carry, and maintain issued equipment.
  • Engage in professional development provided by the college.
  • Be available to work outside of normally scheduled shift for special events or to provide coverage for training, vacation, sick time, or other leave for other department staff.
  • May be responsible for or assist with the secure delivery of goods.
  • Maintain an accurate daily shift log. Complete and submit incident reports in a timely manner.
  • Contact the police or fire department(s) as needed in the event of emergency. Provide support as needed (directions, building access, scene security, etc.).
  • Maintain regular attendance and punctuality.
  • Maintain knowledge of the Jeanne Clery Act and assist in ensuring compliance.
  • Perform other related tasks as assigned.
  • Experience with persons from diverse backgrounds such as sexual orientation, racial, ethnic, religious, linguistic, gender, age, socio-economic, physical and learning abilities, and a commitment to an inclusive and equitable working / learning environment. 
  • High school graduate or equivalent. 
  • One year of customer service work experience, preferably in the security or public safety field. 
  • One year of security experience and conflict resolution. 
  • Possess an understanding of local, state, and federal laws. 
  • Training in crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail required as well as previous experience maintaining accurate records, managing multiple tasks, and planning and organizing work to meet changing priorities and deadlines.
  • Proficiency in standard computer applications including Microsoft Office, Outlook, smart phone use and applications, two-way radio system, access control software, video management software, alarm applications, and records management software.
  • Maintain confidentiality, think critically and exercise independent judgment required. 
  • Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively as a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to promote universal design and accessibility. Proficiency in (or ability to learn within 6 months of hire) the production of accessible content, whether print or electronic.
  • Ability to represent the college in a positive and professional manner and communicate effectively, while using tact, discretion, and courtesy even in stressful situations. 
  • Ability to speak a regionally top spoken language other than English is preferred (Spanish, Vietnamese, Russian, Somali, and Chinese). 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS, LICENSES, AND CERTIFICATIONS:
  • Possess a valid Washington State driver’s license, have a safe driving record, and demonstrate safe driving skills.
  • Possess or be able to obtain First Aid, Stop the Bleed, CPR and AED certification. (Training and certification will be provided at no cost to the employee).
  • Ability to walk, stand, climb, run, and sit for an 8-hour shift. This role requires officers to be in loud and quiet environments and are exposed to variable weather conditions.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Two Years Prior Security, Law Enforcement, or Military experience.
  • One Year Higher Education work experience.
  • ICS 100 and IS 700 Incident command training certification.
  • Familiarity with Omnigo, Software house C-Cure9000, Avigilon, Bosch RPS
  • Prior training and experience with the use of force continuum and defensive tactics.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work hours for this position are 6:00am – 2:00pm, on Saturdays. Campus Security Officers may be required to report to work when the college is closed due to emergencies. Work is physical and mental in nature, involving active movement (walking, standing, climbing, running, and sitting) with sound judgment and leadership while performing daily activities and handling emergencies. Work is performed outside with exposure to the elements of weather, and inside in an environment that is adequately heated and ventilated with exposure to computer screens.
