Quality Control Technician: Projection

The Quality Control Technician: Projection is responsible for inspecting, testing, and verifying the operational readiness of professional projection equipment prior to deployment. This role ensures that projectors from manufacturers such as Epson, Barco, Christie, and Panasonic meet Rentex quality standards and are fully functional before entering the rental inventory or being deployed to clients.

The technician performs detailed visual inspections, verifies firmware versions, checks filtration systems, tests power, signal connections, evaluates image quality and light output. The role focuses on identifying abnormalities in performance, confirming proper functionality, and ensuring all equipment operates within manufacturer specifications.

In addition to quality inspections, this position assists with troubleshooting and technical support for clients, including occasional after-hours support when equipment is deployed in the field. The ideal candidate has working knowledge of professional projectors, strong mechanical aptitude, and the ability to recognize operational issues before equipment leaves the Rentex facility.

Responsibilities:

• Perform quality control inspections and operational testing on projection equipment prior to deployment.


• Conduct detailed visual inspections to identify physical damage, contamination, loose components, or other irregularities.


• Inspect and service air filters and ventilation to ensure proper airflow and cooling performance.


• Test power connections, signal inputs, and control interfaces to confirm reliable operation.


• Verify firmware versions, projector settings, and system configurations meet internal standards.


• Conduct light output testing and image quality checks to verify brightness, clarity, and overall performance to ensure Rentex standards.


• Identify and document performance anomalies or operational irregularities.


• Maintain detailed inspection reports and QC documentation.


• Coordinate with Product teams when equipment requires further evaluation or service.


• Assist clients with basic troubleshooting and operational support, including occasional after-hours technical assistance.


• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment when handling sensitive projection equipment.

Skills:

• Strong mechanical aptitude and technical troubleshooting skills are essential for handling, inspecting, and verifying projection equipment. Attention to detail enables the technician to identify subtle operational issues such as abnormal image output, connectivity problems, or airflow restrictions.


• The role requires a working understanding of signal flow, proper projector handling, and network connectivity between devices, along with the ability to perform accurate functionality and light output testing. Clear communication and documentation skills support effective collaboration with technical teams and enable responsive support when assisting clients with field troubleshooting.


• A solid understanding of projectors ensures all equipment is thoroughly inspected, properly configured, and prepared for reliable operation in demanding rental and live production environments.

Minimum Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent; technical training in audio visual equipment, mechanical systems, or a related field is preferred.


• 2 years of hands-on experience working with projectors, AV equipment, or as a field technician.


• Basic understanding of projection technology, AV equipment and signal flow.


• Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to safely handle, inspect, and maintain small to large projection equipment.


• Ability to follow technical documentation, QC procedures, and equipment checklists.


• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience working with Epson, Barco, Christie, or Panasonic small to large format projectors.


• Familiarity with SMPTE signal standards such as HDMI, SDI, DisplayPort, and EDID protocols.


• Prior experience in AV, live events, or technical production environments.


• Working knowledge of network connectivity, including IP addressing, device discovery, and network control of equipment.
