INSTRUMENTATION, CONTROLS AND ELECTRICAL TECHNICIAN

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is skilled technical work involving responsibility for the installation, maintenance, repair, calibration, and troubleshooting of instrumentation, control systems, and electrical equipment used in the operation of a municipal wastewater treatment facility. The incumbent performs both preventive and corrective maintenance on a wide range of electrical, electronic, pneumatic, and mechanical devices to ensure safe, efficient, and continuous operation of plant systems. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor and Assistant Maintenance Supervisor with considerable leeway allowed for the exercise of independent judgment in carrying out technical details of the work.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)

Installs electrical, instrumentation, and control systems equipment;

Performs preventive and corrective maintenance on electrical, instrumentation, and control systems equipment;

Inspects, troubleshoots, and repairs control system components and electrical distribution equipment;

Configures, tests, and calibrates instrumentation, sensors, transmitters, and controllers;

Monitors pressure, flow, and temperature controls, process limit controllers, and gas analysis equipment;

Documents inspections, maintenance, and repairs performed on equipment and systems;

Assists during power outage events, coordinating with contractors and emergency response personnel;

Installs and terminates wiring required for electrical, instrumentation, and control systems;

Maintains and repairs communication and signal systems;

Maintains and services storage batteries, chargers, lighting circuits, lighting fixtures, and emergency generators;

Operates, maintains, and repairs supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems;

Assists maintenance staff with other duties as directed by the Maintenance Supervisor.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good understanding of control, instrumentation, and electrical systems;

Thorough knowledge of the common practices, tools, terminology, and safety precautions of the electrical trade;

Ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues involving electronic devices and electrical systems;

Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, wiring diagrams, and P&IDs;

Knowledge of instruments, sensors, and control devices used in process systems;

Ability to follow written and verbal instructions;

Ability to climb, stoop, reach, and lift objects up to 75 pounds;

Ability to work in confined spaces, at heights, and in areas with varying temperatures;

Working knowledge of applicable electrical codes, regulations, and best practices;

Reliability, initiative, and a high regard for safety are essential.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or possession of an accredited high school equivalency diploma and five (5) years of experience in the maintenance, calibration and troubleshooting of instrumentation, control systems and electrical distribution equipment.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Eligibility for a Class D New York State Driver’s License. Possession of such license at time of appointment and must be maintained throughout the term of employment under this title.
