Primary Function
Under general supervision, performs all or any combination of semi-skilled painting, concrete or carpentry duties relative to the construction, maintenance, and/or repair of district buildings and facilities. Performs other duties as assigned.
Distinguishing Characteristics
The Maintenance Carpenter I is the entry-level of the Maintenance Carpenter series, which perform basic building maintenance skills in carpentry, painting, concrete and related trades and work under direct supervision.
Employees in this classification may be reassigned to assist other personnel or perform other related duties in accordance with workload requirements. Progression to the next level will depend on vacant positions at the higher level.
It is the responsibility of all employees in this classification to report for emergency duty if called. Lacking a bona fide excuse satisfactory to supervision, a second failure to report when called could result in discharge.
This position, at times, requires the management of hazardous materials or waste and thus requires mandatory training in hazardous waste operations, hazardous materials spill response, and/or hazardous materials communication.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

- Paints district rental homes, buildings, structures, and other items including cabinets, chairs, desk and other furnishings using brushes, rollers or spray guns.
- Scrapes and sands surfaces to remove old paint or excess filler.
- Mixes and applies putty, spackle or other filler material.
- Applies primer or base and finish coats.
- Mixes and matches colors by blending portions of pigments, base and thinner.
- Measures, cuts, fits, nails, or bolts materials into complete form using various hand and power tools.
- Builds and repairs various wooden structures, including concrete forms and scaffolds.
- Sets forms, bends, sets and ties reinforcing steel.
- Mixes, pours and spreads concrete for various district projects such as substation transformer pads, anchor cones, fence, and curb lines.
- Assists Maintenance Carpenter III as assigned to acquire skill and experience.
- Maintains the beautification of landscape areas within the district.
- Maintains facilities grounds and parking lot areas near, clean and orderly.
- Performs other duties as assigned
