Full-time - 40 hours / week


Under general supervision, performs a broad range of technical engineering support functions; assists in the design of CAD drawings and architectural designs; develops, prepare engineering calculations and specifications; investigates and inspects construction sites. Performs other duties as assigned.


Distinguishing Characteristics

The Engineering Aide I is the entry class in the Engineering Aide series. Progression to the next level will depend on vacant positions at the higher level.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The examples of essential functions listed below are representative but not necessarily exhaustive or descriptive and incumbent may be assigned other related functions not listed herein if such functions are a logical assignment for the position.
  1. Assists in inputting and accessing data using a computer terminal for preliminary preparation of architectural drawings; and complies with applicable federal, state, county and city building codes regulations.
  2. Inspects construction sites to ensure conformance to architectural designs; assists engineering personnel in the gathering of field data and taking measurements calculating and recording distances, bounds and angles.
  3. Assists in conducting research studies of various data pertaining to architectural designs and evaluates data pertaining to special projects as assigned.
  4. Assists in creating, updating and maintaining CAD drawings for space assessments and landscaping drawings.
  5. Assists in the preparation of cost estimates on various construction project.
  6. Assists with the preparation of preliminary engineering calculations and specifications for procurement of materials.
  7. Assists in updating or revising existing drawings to ensure completeness of drawings and files.
  8. Assists in the coordination of work projects with section personnel.
  9. Assists in maintaining accurate records, files and documents.
  10. Performs manual labor under all types of outdoor weather conditions.
MARGINAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Ensures completeness of various forms, permits, invoices, and other documents related to construction or remodeling projects.
  2. Coordinates work projects with section personnel.
  3. Performs other duties as assigned.

Education
  • High school equivalency with supplemental courses in engineering, drafting, computer graphics and/or advanced mathematics and;
 
Experience
  • One year of appropriate automated drafting experience.
Licensing
A valid driver license issued by the State of California, Department of Motor Vehicles is required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge

Principles and practices relating to civil or architectural engineering; engineering and mathematical concepts; basic methods of operations, materials, equipment, tools and terminology used in building and plant construction and maintenance; basic operation of heating, ventilating, refrigerating, plumbing, and fire suppressant systems; shop mathematics, charts and tables; applicable governing regulations and codes; specification and cost estimate preparation; federal, state, county and city building codes; shop and field safety rules and regulations; records management; manual and computer-aided drafting techniques and procedures; personal computer hardware, operating systems, databases, spreadsheet, word processing and CAD software; and district service area and facility locations.

  • Learns engineering procedures; read, analyze and interpret technical and professional journals, construction plans, schematics designs, equipment manuals, specifications, technical procedures, or governmental regulations;
  • coordinate work to be performed; perform engineering and mathematical calculations rapidly and accurately;
  • write report, business correspondence, technical descriptions of procedures and procedure manuals; compile and prepare computer generated designs, drawings, reports and correspondence;
  • communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; research information from a variety of sources;
  • understand safety rules and regulations and work safely; be prompt and regular in attendance;
  • maintain effective relations with the general public, district personnel and public and/or private agency representatives;
  • and work courteously and cooperatively with district employees, landowners, contractors, vendors, public agency representatives and the general public.

General office equipment, computer, calculator, straight edge, track ball, hand level, tripod, level, transit, measuring tape and wheel, leveling rod, plotters, copier, hard hat, code book, specifications, reference books, telephone, fax, digital camera, two-way radio and vehicle.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
