The Qualified Mental Health Professional (QMHP) Mobile Crisis Response Specialist provides immediate, community-based crisis intervention services to individuals experiencing behavioral health crises. The QMHP responds to crisis situations in homes, schools, community settings, hospitals, and other locations as directed by the regional crisis call center or dispatch system. Services are designed to assess risk, stabilize the crisis, prevent unnecessary hospitalization or incarceration, and connect individuals and families to ongoing behavioral health services and supports.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Respond to behavioral health crises within required response timeframes.
  • Conduct comprehensive crisis assessments, including suicide risk assessments, homicide risk assessments, and safety planning.
  • Provide crisis intervention, de-escalation, and stabilization services.
  • Collaborate with individuals, families, law enforcement, schools, hospitals, and community partners.
  • Develop and implement individualized crisis stabilization plans.
  • Coordinate referrals to appropriate behavioral health, medical, and social service resources.
  • Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation in accordance with agency, Medicaid, and state regulations.
  • Participate in on-call, after-hours, weekend, and holiday crisis coverage as assigned.
  • Attend supervision, staff meetings, and required trainings.
  • Maintain compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations, including DBHDS requirements.
  • Adhere to agency policies regarding confidentiality, ethics, safety, and professional conduct.

Minimum Qualifications

The QMHP must meet the qualifications established by the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS) and Department of Medical Assistance Services (DMAS).

The individual must possess:

  • A bachelor's degree or higher in Human Services or a related field, including:
  • Psychology
  • Social Work
  • Counseling
  • Sociology
  • Human Services
  • Special Education
  • Nursing
  • Rehabilitation Counseling
  • Other approved behavioral health disciplines

AND

  • Registration as a QMHP-A, QMHP-C, QMHP-Trainee, or equivalent credential recognized by the Virginia Board of Counseling.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelors or Masters Degree
  • Mobile crisis trained
  • Minimum of one year of experience providing behavioral health services.
  • Experience working with individuals experiencing mental health, substance use, or co-occurring disorders.
  • Previous crisis intervention, emergency services, or community-based behavioral health experience preferred.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Certification in Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) or equivalent de-escalation training preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of crisis intervention techniques and trauma-informed care.
  • Ability to assess risk and develop effective safety plans.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and professional during high-stress situations.
  • Knowledge of community resources and referral processes.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Proficiency with electronic health records and documentation systems.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to travel throughout assigned service areas.
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, and drive for extended periods.
  • Ability to respond safely in community settings and crisis environments.

Licenses and Requirements

  • Valid Virginia Driver's License.
  • Reliable transportation.
  • Current automobile insurance.
  • Successful completion of criminal background checks, Child Protective Services (CPS) checks, and other screenings required by state regulations.

Pay: $38.12 - $45.91 per hour
