Position Summary
The ADC Intern / CADC Counselor is responsible for providing supervised clinical services to individuals receiving substance use disorder treatment in a non-hospital detoxification and residential setting. This role supports the delivery of ethical, trauma-informed, and evidence-based care, including counseling, case coordination, and clinical documentation, in accordance with applicable state regulations, including N.J.A.C. 13:34-10 through 19, and agency policies.
Key Responsibilities
- Facilitate individual and group counseling sessions utilizing evidence-based and trauma-informed approaches
- Provide psychoeducation on substance use, relapse prevention, coping skills, and recovery support
- Support clients in exploring the impact of substance use on functioning across life domains
- Incorporate motivational interviewing and stage-of-change interventions into clinical practice
- Assist in completing clinical screenings, intake assessments, and biopsychosocial evaluations
- Contribute to the development of individualized, person-centered treatment plans based on ASAM criteria
- Participate in ongoing treatment plan reviews, including documentation of progress toward goals and objectives
- Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to determine appropriate level of care and ongoing treatment needs
- Coordinate with medical providers, and external referral sources as needed
- Support discharge planning, including aftercare and recovery support linkage
- Maintain compliance with confidentiality laws, including 42 CFR Part 2 and HIPAA
- Ensure documentation reflects medical necessity and aligns with ASAM criteria
- Complete all clinical documentation in a timely and accurate manner in accordance with regulatory and accreditation standards.
- Participate in required clinical supervision in accordance with CADC certification requirements.
Qualifications:
- Currently enrolled in, or actively working toward completion of, a CADC certification program
- Must demonstrate active progress toward certification (e.g., coursework completion, supervision hours, or exam eligibility)
- Ability to provide services under clinical supervision within scope of training
- Commitment to obtaining CADC within a designated timeframe
- Bachelors degree (Masters degree preferred) in Social Work, Psychology, or a related behavioral health field
- Active licensure, certification (LPC, LAC, LCSW, LSW, CADC or equivalent depending on state requirements)
- Experience working in substance use treatment, detox, residential, or behavioral health settings
- Knowledge of ASAM criteria and level of care determinations
- Strong clinical assessment and decision-making skills
- Excellent communication and documentation abilities
- Ability to maintain professional boundaries and ethical standards
Preferred Experience:
- Ability to engage clients in early recovery and ambivalence
- Understanding of co-occurring mental health considerations (with substance use as primary focus)
- Familiarity with withdrawal management needs
- Understanding of the use of clinical assessment tools as appropriate (e.g., GAD-7, PHQ-9, C-SSRS, PCL-5) to support treatment planning
- Experience in detox and/or residential treatment settings preferred
- Bilingual proficiency is a strong asset for this role.
