The Medical & Behavioral Health Support Specialist at ReNew Recovery Cafe provides trauma-informed, non-judgmental care and support to Café Members experiencing mental health and substance use challenges. Licensed as a Paramedic or Registered Nurse, this role bridges basic first-aid medical care, recovery support, and community connection, promoting dignity, safety, and stabilization within a peer-supported recovery environment.
This position supports ReNew’s mission by meeting Members where they are, addressing immediate mental health/substance use and emotional needs, and strengthening pathways to ongoing care, recovery, and wellness.
Minimum Qualifications
· Active, unrestricted Paramedic or Registered Nurse (RN) license
· Minimum two (2) years of experience working with individuals impacted by mental health conditions and/or substance use disorders
· Demonstrated understanding of trauma-informed care, recovery-oriented practices, and harm reduction
· Current CPR/BLS certification (ACLS preferred, if applicable)
· Ability to conduct basic medical assessments and provide first aid within scope of licensure
· Strong communication skills and comfort working in a community-based, non-clinical setting
Medical & Mental Health Support
· Provide basic first aid and non-emergency medical assistance to ReNew Members and staff as needed.
· Conduct brief medical and wellness assessments to identify immediate needs and risks while making appropriate referrals to providers.
· Observe, monitor, and respond to behavioral health concerns that may require referral or de-escalation
Trauma-Informed & Recovery-Centered Engagement
· Deliver care grounded in trauma-informed, person-centered, and recovery-oriented principles
· Create a welcoming, respectful, and emotionally safe environment for Members
· Support individuals experiencing distress, crisis, or instability with calm, compassionate responses.
Mental Health & Substance Use Support
· Assist Members navigating mental health and substance use challenges, including co-occurring conditions
· Provide education on wellness, harm reduction, medication awareness, and self-care strategies
· Encourage voluntary engagement in recovery support without coercion or judgment
Resource Navigation & Collaboration
· Connect Members to community resources, healthcare providers, behavioral health services, and crisis support
· Work well alongside ReNew staff, peer recovery leaders, and partner organizations
· Support warm handoffs when Members choose to pursue additional care
