Job Summary
We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Crane Operator to join our manufacturing team in our Furnace department. The ideal candidate will possess strong mechanical knowledge and a thorough understanding of furnace operations. This role involves overseeing the operation of furnaces used in metal processing, ensuring safety and efficiency while maintaining high-quality standards.
Responsibilities
- Operate crane to lift, move, and position heavy materials and equipment. They must ensure the safety and precision of their work, adhering to strict operational guidelines
- Operating and controlling gas, oil, coal, electric-arc, or electric induction furnaces to melt metal prior to casting.
- Weighing out specified amounts of metal ingots and scrap metal, and charging them into the furnace.
- Loading molten metal into the furnace using a transfer ladle.
- Regulating the injection of fuel and air into the furnace, or moving controls to regulate the flow of electricity and water coolant through electrodes to heat the furnace to the specified temperature.
- Observing the color of the metal and instruments, such as voltmeter, ammeter, wattmeter, and pyrometer, and adjusting controls to maintain the specified temperature.
- Sprinkling fluxing agent over the surface of molten metal to bring impurities to the surface, forming a layer of slag.
- Skimming off slag using a strainer.
- Removing the crucible containing molten metal from the furnace, using a hoist, levers, or breaking a clay plug to pour the metal into a ladle for transportation to molds.
- Removing a test sample of molten metal from the crucible and pouring it into a mold.
- Recording data from each melt on a form.
The furnace crane operator must be familiar with the operation of various types of furnaces and be able to perform sample tests to verify that the equipment is functional. They must also be aware of potential mechanical or other problems with the furnace and be able to address
- Operate and monitor furnace equipment to ensure optimal performance and safety.
- Assemble components as required for production processes.
- operate an industrial type electric melting furnace to make ductile iron.
- Determine temperature if molten iron using am immersion type temperature recorder.
- Works with internal lab to verify quality of iron prior to releasing it for production.
- Conduct plasma cutting operations to prepare materials for production.
- Use cranes for moving heavy materials safely within the facility.
- Operate furnace controls to fill ladles
- Read and interpret blueprints to understand specifications and requirements.
- Assist crane operator to position pre-heater buckets
- Maintain a clean and organized work area, adhering to safety protocols at all times.
Requirements
- Proven mechanical knowledge with experience in operating a crane or similar equipment.
- Familiarity with basic math skills for measurements and calculations related to production tasks.
- Strong attention to detail with a focus on quality assurance in all tasks performed.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment while also being self-motivated.
