Extended-Length Thread Milling Machinist (Lead Screws & Acme)

Picture your day starting beside a 30-foot shaft suspended from an overhead crane. You review the engineering print, map out how you’ll fight deflection and thermal growth, and begin dialing in your setup. You select and sharpen the right cutters, set your feeds, speeds, and coolant for the alloy, and prepare to hold lead and pitch diameter across a pass that could run the length of a city bus. What You’ll Do

• Set up and operate dedicated thread milling equipment to cut precision external threads on long shafts (from 4 feet up to 40 feet).
• Produce precision lead screws, Acme and stub-Acme forms, and custom thread profiles for demanding applications.
• Use overhead cranes, steady rests, and roller supports to safely load, align, and support heavy, extended-length bar stock.
• Maintain tight tolerances for lead accuracy, pitch diameter, and depth across extreme lengths.
• Inspect with pitch micrometers, the 3-wire method, optical comparators, thread gages, precision calipers, and dial indicators.
• Select, install, and tune cutters, inserts, and indexables; calculate optimal feeds, speeds, and coolant flow by material.
• Machine a wide range of metals: carbon and chromoly alloy steels (4140/4340), stainless steels, specialized bronzes, and other high‑tensile materials.
• Work directly from engineering drawings, prints, and customer specifications.

What You Bring

• 2 years of hands-on thread mill operation experience.
• Comfort handling long shafts, cylinders, and rods; you know how to mitigate deflection, vibration, and thermal growth.
• Proficiency with precision measurement tools (micrometers, dial indicators, thread pitch mics, 3-wire method).
• Proven safety with overhead bridge cranes, rigging straps, steady rests, and roller supports.
• Reliability and pride in craftsmanship—clean finishes, zero scrap mindset, and meticulous tooling care.
• Own set of tools is required.
• Specifically proficient with a Lees Bradnor Thread Mill; capable of fabricating parts directly from technical drawings and making your own precision cutters.
