Job Summary:
The Patient Care Technician (PCT) in the Surgery Center provides essential support to the surgical team by assisting with patient care, maintaining a clean and safe environment, and ensuring proper preparation of surgical areas. The PCT will work under the direct supervision of registered nurses (RNs) and licensed surgical staff to enhance the quality of care for patients undergoing surgical procedures.
Key Responsibilities:
- Pre-Operative Care:
- Assist with patient intake, including verifying patient information, obtaining vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, temperature, etc.), and documenting relevant health history.
- Prepare patients for surgical procedures, including assisting with gowning, draping, and positioning.
- Ensure patient comfort and safety during pre-operative preparation.
- Intra-Operative Support:
- Assist surgical team members with room preparation, including setting up surgical instruments, equipment, and sterile fields.
- Monitor patient condition and communicate any changes or concerns to the surgical team.
- Maintain a sterile environment by following standard infection control practices, including proper hand hygiene and personal protective equipment (PPE) usage.
- Post-Operative Care:
- Assist in the recovery process by monitoring patients as they regain consciousness, checking vital signs, and addressing patient needs.
- Provide support during patient transfers to recovery or post-operative units.
- Educate patients and families on post-operative care instructions, as directed by the surgical team.
- General Duties:
- Ensure proper cleaning, sterilization, and maintenance of surgical instruments and equipment.
- Maintain cleanliness of the surgical area and patient care rooms.
- Assist with inventory management, including restocking supplies and equipment as needed.
- Transport patients to and from different areas within the surgery center safely.
Qualifications:
- Education:
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Certification as a Patient Care Technician (PCT) or Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) preferred.
- Experience:
- Previous experience in a healthcare or surgical environment is preferred.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required or must be obtained within 30 days of hire.
- Familiarity with medical terminology and patient care procedures is beneficial.
- Skills:
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions accurately.
- Effective communication skills, with the ability to interact compassionately with patients and their families.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
- Basic computer skills for data entry and documentation.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout the shift.
- Capable of lifting and positioning patients when necessary (up to 50 lbs).
- Ability to perform tasks requiring manual dexterity, including handling medical instruments and equipment.
