Service Technician - Fire Apparatus

The Service Technician is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, testing, and maintaining fire apparatus and emergency vehicles to ensure they operate safely and reliably. This position plays a critical role in delivering exceptional customer service by completing repairs accurately, efficiently, and in accordance with manufacturer and company standards.

Service Technicians work both in the service center and at customer locations, collaborating with the Service Manager, Service Coordinator, Parts Department, and fellow technicians to ensure work is completed on time and to the highest quality standards. This position requires strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to safety and continuous improvement.

Position Responsibilities

The Service Technician is expected to:

  • Perform inspections, diagnostics, repairs, maintenance, and testing on fire apparatus and related equipment.
  • Accurately identify mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electronic system issues.
  • Complete repairs in accordance with manufacturer specifications, safety regulations, and company quality standards.
  • Maintain ownership of assigned work from diagnosis through final quality inspection for complaint, cause, and correction.
  • Document inspections, repairs, labor, and recommendations accurately on work orders. Complete all work orders within required timeframes for submission.
  • Communicate repair progress, additional findings, and repair recommendations to the Service Coordinator and Service Manager.
  • Coordinate with the Parts Department to ensure required parts and materials are available to minimize downtime.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and scheduled service on customer vehicles.
  • Respond to field service calls and perform repairs at customer locations as required.
  • Operate diagnostic equipment, specialty tools, and service equipment safely and effectively.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
  • Follow OSHA, DOT, NFPA, manufacturer, and company safety requirements.
  • Assist and mentor less experienced technicians as appropriate.
  • Participate in ongoing technical training and manufacturer certification programs.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives that enhance efficiency, quality, and customer satisfaction.

Take complete ownership of the quality of every repair performed. Ensure all work is completed correctly the first time while maintaining the highest standards of workmanship, safety, and customer satisfaction.

Technical Expertise

Use technical knowledge and diagnostic skills to identify root causes of equipment failures and develop effective repair solutions. Make sound decisions when unexpected issues arise and communicate recommendations clearly.

Customer Focus

Represent Reliant Fire Apparatus professionally during all customer interactions. Build trust by communicating clearly, providing timely updates, and delivering reliable, high-quality service.

Service Operations

Work collaboratively with the Service Manager, Service Coordinator, Parts Department, and fellow technicians to efficiently move repairs through the service process while meeting customer expectations and scheduling commitments.

Time Management

Effectively prioritize assigned work, manage repair timelines, and adapt to changing service demands while maintaining productivity and quality.

Safety

Promote a culture of safety by following all company policies and regulatory requirements. Properly use personal protective equipment (PPE), tools, and equipment while maintaining a safe workplace.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Technical degree or vocational training in diesel, automotive, heavy equipment, or related field preferred.
  • Experience repairing heavy-duty trucks, fire apparatus, emergency vehicles, construction equipment, or similar equipment preferred.
  • Strong mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and electronic troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to read electrical schematics, service manuals, and technical documentation.
  • Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.
  • CDL or ability to obtain one preferred.
  • EVT certifications are a plus or willingness to obtain.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently lift up to 75 pounds.
  • Stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, climb, and work in confined spaces.
  • Work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Safely operate hand tools, power tools, lifting equipment, and diagnostic equipment.
  • Ability to work at heights and around heavy equipment.

Pay: $25.00 - $45.00 per hour
