Job Overview

We are seeking a skilled, dependable, and safety-focused School Bus and Van Mechanic to join our maintenance team. In this role, you will be responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining a fleet of school buses, vans, and support vehicles to ensure they operate safely, reliably, and in compliance with federal, state, and company regulations.

The ideal candidate will have strong mechanical and electrical diagnostic skills, experience with diesel engines and school transportation vehicles, and a commitment to providing safe transportation for students. Your expertise will play a critical role in keeping our fleet road-ready and ensuring the safe transportation of the world's most precious cargo—our children.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect, diagnose, repair, and maintain school buses, vans, and other fleet vehicles in accordance with manufacturer specifications and regulatory requirements.
  • Perform preventive maintenance services, including oil changes, filter replacements, fluid checks, tire service, brake inspections, and lubrication.
  • Troubleshoot and repair diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, electrical systems, HVAC systems, suspension components, steering systems, and air brake systems.
  • Utilize diagnostic software, scan tools, and OEM service information to identify and resolve mechanical and electrical issues.
  • Conduct state inspections and safety inspections as required.
  • Repair and maintain wheelchair lifts, crossing gates, warning light systems, camera systems, and other school bus-specific equipment.
  • Respond to vehicle breakdowns and emergency roadside service calls when necessary.
  • Accurately document inspections, repairs, parts usage, and maintenance activities in fleet maintenance software and service records.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment while following all OSHA, DOT, state, and company safety regulations.
  • Collaborate with drivers, transportation staff, and management to address vehicle concerns and ensure maximum fleet availability.

Qualifications & Skills

  • High school diploma or GED required; technical or vocational training in diesel technology preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience repairing and maintaining diesel-powered vehicles; school bus or commercial fleet experience preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of diesel and gasoline engines, air brake systems, electrical systems, HVAC systems, and vehicle diagnostics.
  • Experience using diagnostic equipment, computerized maintenance systems, and OEM repair resources.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, wiring diagrams, and service bulletins.
  • Familiarity with DOT, state inspection, and school bus safety regulations.
  • Welding and fabrication experience is a plus.
  • Valid driver's license required; CDL with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements preferred or willingness to obtain.
  • Ability to safely lift up to 50 pounds and perform physical tasks including bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in varying weather conditions.
  • Strong problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills.
