A Low Voltage Technician installs, maintains, and repairs low-voltage electrical systems such as security, fire alarm, and data networks, ensuring proper functionality and compliance with safety standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Installation and Wiring: Install, terminate, and connect low-voltage systems including security alarms, fire alarms, CCTV, audio-visual systems, telecommunications, and network infrastructure, following blueprints and schematics
  • Maintenance and Repair: Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair system malfunctions, performing routine inspections to ensure optimal performance 
  • Testing and Commissioning: Conduct tests to verify system functionality, perform EMF testing, and implement solutions to mitigate interference 
  • Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate records of installations, repairs, and materials used, and prepare detailed reports for clients or project managers 
  • Client Interaction: Provide training and support to clients on system operation, explain technical issues, and ensure customer satisfaction 
  • Collaboration: Work with other technicians, electricians, or construction professionals to integrate low-voltage systems into larger projects 

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Technical Knowledge: Proficiency in low-voltage systems, including installation, testing, troubleshooting, and repair. RSSD will train on specific systems.
  • Blueprint and Schematic Reading: Ability to interpret technical drawings and wiring diagrams 
  • Problem-Solving: Strong diagnostic skills to identify and resolve system issues efficiently 
  • Safety Compliance: Knowledge of electrical codes, safety regulations, and industry standards 
  • Customer Service: Effective communication skills for interacting with clients and explaining technical concepts 
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to work in confined spaces, climb ladders, and handle equipment safely 

Education and Certifications

  • Education: No strict requirement, but vocational programs, technical training, or associate degrees in electronics, engineering, or related fields are preferred. RSSD will train on specific systems.
  • Certifications: Relevant certifications such as CTS, BICSI, OSHA, or industry-specific low-voltage credentials can enhance employability 
  • Experience: Previous experience with low-voltage systems is advantageous, though some positions provide on-the-job training 

Work Environment

Low Voltage Technicians work in gaming, commercial, and industrial settings, including homes, schools, offices, and government buildings. The role may involve team collaboration on larger projects or independent work on smaller installations. Travel is required.

Experienced technicians may advance to supervisory roles, train new hires, or specialize in high-demand systems such as fiber optics, smart home integration, or advanced security systems
