Responsibilities of the Machine Shop Manager:
Operations & Production
- Oversee daily operations of CNC and manual machining departments
- Plan, schedule, and prioritize jobs to meet production deadlines and customer requirements
- Ensure efficient machine setup, operation, and uptime (mills, lathes, grinders, etc.)
- Monitor workflow and allocate resources to maintain productivity and delivery targets
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Engineering and Quality teams to resolve production challenges
Leadership & Team Development
- Supervise machinists, programmers, and support staff
- Assign work, manage performance, and provide ongoing coaching
- Train employees on machining processes, safety, and quality standards
- Support recruiting, hiring, and onboarding efforts
- Promote a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement
Quality & Continuous Improvement
- Ensure adherence to dimensional tolerances and surface finish requirements
- Interpret blueprints, CAD models, and process documentation
- Lead root cause analysis and corrective actions for defects or inefficiencies
- Implement process improvements, tooling enhancements, and lean initiatives
- Maintain compliance with quality standards and documentation practices
Safety & Compliance
- Enforce workplace safety policies and regulatory compliance (OSHA standards)
- Identify risks and implement corrective/preventive actions
- Ensure proper maintenance, calibration, and safe operation of equipment
Equipment & Resource Management
- Oversee preventive maintenance and machine repair schedules
- Manage tooling, fixtures, and consumables inventory
- Evaluate and recommend capital equipment investments to improve capacity and efficiency
Requirements of the Machine Shop Manager:
- Required: High School Diploma or GED
- Preferred: Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Manufacturing, Mechanical Engineering, or related field
- Strong understanding of GD&T, machining tolerances, and blueprint reading.
- Experience with machining aluminum, steel, and specialty alloys.
- Ability to troubleshoot machining, programming, and tooling issues.
- Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
- Experience in a casting/foundry-related machining environment.
- Knowledge of Mastercam, Fusion 360, or similar CAM software.
- Familiarity with lean manufacturing, 5S, or continuous improvement methodologies.
- Experience working in ISO-certified environments.
Other Key Requirements:
- 100% onsite
- Manufacturing shop setting with exposure to machinery, noise, and metalworking materials.
- Ability to stand, walk, and move between departments for extended periods.
- Ability to lift up to 40 lbs. as needed.
- No sponsorships or visa holders. No Corp-to-Corp.
