Start a Career in Fire Protection with Relay Fire & Safety

Relay Fire & Safety is growing, and we’re looking for a Fire Extinguisher Technician / Trainee to join our team based out of Acton, Massachusetts.

This is a great opportunity for someone who is mechanically inclined, dependable, hands-on, and eager to learn a skilled trade. You do not need to come in as a seasoned fire extinguisher technician to be successful here. If you have a strong work ethic, enjoy working in the field, like solving problems, and want to build a long-term career in the fire protection / life safety industry, we want to talk to you.

In this role, you’ll train alongside experienced team members and learn how to inspect, service, maintain, recharge, and test portable fire extinguishers at customer sites throughout the region. You’ll gain exposure to NFPA 10 compliance, fire extinguisher inspections, hydrostatic testing, code requirements, and customer-facing field service work.

Important: This role is based out of our Acton, MA branch, so candidates should be comfortable commuting to Acton and surrounding areas on a regular basis.

Why This Role Is a Great Opportunity

  • Entry-level friendly for the right candidate with mechanical aptitude and a willingness to learn
  • Learn a stable, in-demand trade in the fire protection / life safety industry
  • Join a growing company with real long-term career potential
  • Work for a company focused on safety, service, and doing things the right way
  • Build skills in field service, inspections, compliance, customer service, and technical fire protection work
  • Opportunity to grow into a fully qualified Fire Extinguisher Service Technician

What You’ll Do

As a Fire Extinguisher Technician / Trainee, you’ll work in the field supporting inspection, service, and compliance work for customer fire extinguisher equipment. Responsibilities include:

  • Perform fire extinguisher inspections at customer locations in accordance with NFPA 10, company standards, and applicable local requirements
  • Verify extinguisher type, placement, accessibility, tagging, and overall condition
  • Assist with or perform maintenance, recharging, repair, and replacement of portable fire extinguishers
  • Support hydrostatic testing and related compliance work in accordance with DOT and NFPA requirements
  • Apply updated service tags, seals, labels, and compliance documentation
  • Complete inspection reports and service records using company-approved systems and software
  • Communicate service findings and recommendations clearly and professionally to customers
  • Maintain a safe, organized, and professional presence in the field
  • Learn and stay current on fire extinguisher inspection requirements, fire code standards, and safety procedures
  • Represent Relay Fire & Safety professionally at customer sites every day

What We’re Looking For

We’re open to candidates from a variety of backgrounds, especially those with mechanical ability, field service experience, construction-related experience, or a strong interest in learning a technical trade.

Preferred Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and comfort working with tools, equipment, and hands-on service tasks
  • Ability to work independently, stay organized, and manage field responsibilities professionally
  • Strong customer service and communication skills
  • Reliable, coachable, and eager to learn
  • Ability to lift, move, and handle fire extinguishers and related equipment as needed

Experience That Could Translate Well

We encourage candidates to apply if they have experience in any of the following:

  • Fire extinguisher inspection or service
  • Fire protection or life safety
  • HVAC, plumbing, electrical, alarm, sprinkler, or other field service trades
  • Mechanical maintenance, warehouse/service operations, or route-based service work

  • Delivery/service roles that involve customer interaction and hands-on work

Nice to Have, But Not Required

  • Fire extinguisher inspection or service experience
  • Knowledge of NFPA 10
  • DOT cylinder handling or hydrostatic testing experience
  • Fire protection certifications, or willingness to obtain them after hire

What Success Looks Like in This Role

You’ll be a fit for this role if you:

  • Want to build a long-term career, not just grab another job
  • Like being active and working in the field rather than sitting behind a desk all day
  • Take pride in doing quality work and keeping customers safe
  • Can learn technical processes, follow compliance standards, and stay detail-oriented
  • Show up reliably, communicate well, and handle customer-facing situations professionally
