Position Summary

The Health Sciences Instructor – Adjunct shall teach courses and implement the instructional program by course syllabi, College policies, and Alabama Community College System guidelines and support the total mission of the College. Coordinates instructional activities with the Division Chairperson and other duties as assigned. The position requires positive knowledge of the instructional discipline.

Salary Commensurate with education and experience according to ACCS Board of Trustees Salary Schedule L.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

At a minimum, the major responsibilities of instructors shall include:


  • Perform the duties as specified in conformity with policies established by the Alabama Community College System Board of Trustees, Reid State Technical College Faculty & Staff Handbook, Alabama Board of Nursing Nurse Practice Act, and Alabama Department of Public Health.
  • Perform for-credit training for the Long-Term Care Certified Assistant course and Medication Assistant Course.
  • Retain and submit documentation as requested to support accreditation efforts.
  • Maintain the nursing program at a level that meets the standards or criteria of the College, Alabama Community College System, appropriate approval boards, and accrediting agencies.
  • Provide instruction by course syllabi employing professional methods that promote the mission of the learning-centered college.
  • Adhere to the policies and procedures established by the Student Handbook and the contents of the College Catalog and amendments; maintain the nursing programs and resources at a high level of quality and efficiency by continuously upgrading course materials and by recommending additional instructional equipment and materials as deemed appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate records of student attendance and grades and provide feedback on theoretical/clinical performance to the students promptly.
  • Demonstrate ethical behavior, loyalty, honesty, and integrity, both on and off the campus.
  • Recommend media resources for purchase to the department chair.
  • Ensure safe environment for student learning.
  • Adhere to and assist in implementing college policies, objectives and functions in accordance with the college philosophy and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the President, Director of Instructional Services/Career Technical Education Instructor, or Division Chairperson.

Qualifications

Adult teaching experience as evidenced by one(1) of the following:

  • Earned Master’s degree in Nursing from a regionally accredited institution preferred, not required.
  • Earned Associates Degree in Nursing from a regionally accredited institution preferred, not required.
  • Earned Practical Nursing Certificate from a regionally accredited institution required.
  • Attended an approved Alabama Train-the-Trainer Course.
  • Completed instructor training at the American Red Cross (include a copy of instructor certification).
  • Minimum of two (2) years of nursing experience.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience caring for geriatric patients.
  • Current active and unencumbered Alabama Nursing License (RN or LPN).
  • Current CPR certification through the American Heart Association or American Red Cross – Basic Life Support healthcare providers with AED.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills and ease in relating to people from a variety of educational, cultural, and social backgrounds.

Sick Leave
All regular full-time non-instructional staff earns one day of sick leave which is the equivalent of 8 hours of sick leave per month. Unused sick leave is rolled over to the following year. Upon retirement, employees are allowed to convert unused sick time into service time for the purpose of retirement. Up to 10 days a year of professional development leave with pay may be granted by the President.

Retirement
The TRS was established in 1939 to provide benefits to qualified persons employed by state-supported educational institutions. Responsibility for the management and administration of the TRS is vested in its Board of Control. The Boards of Control elect the Secretary-Treasurer who serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the RSA and is responsible for the day-to-day management of the RSA. All regular full-time and part-time employees (non-temporary and non- student) who work at least 20 hours per week are required to participate in The Teachers' Retirement System of Alabama.

Health Insurance
PEEHIP, established in 1983, provides health insurance benefits for active and retired education employees and is governed by the PEEHIP Board of Control. If desired, the employee may elect four options rather than health insurance options to include hospital indemnity, cancer, dental, and vision.

Tuition Assistance
This tuition waiver program is designed for all full-time instructional and non-instructional employees of The Alabama College System and the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education and their dependents as defined under by policy. The program will be coordinated by each institution for employees within The Alabama College System and the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education. An application form for the tuition assistance program is available in the Human Resources office and should be completed prior to registration for classes.

Employees/Dependents at two-year colleges:
  • 1/3 waived after 1st year
  • 2/3 waived after 2nd year
  • 3/3 waived after 3rd year
Note: Employee is vested after 10 years in Retirement System. Additional information regarding retirement may be obtained from the Retirement System Web site at www.rsa.al.gov.
