The laboratory technical assistant performs tasks to support the laboratory technical staff in specimen procurement, specimen processing, and performs basic noninterpretive analytic procedures under the direct supervision of the technical staff.
Overview Of Responsibilities
- Performs pre-analytic specimen processing.
- Performs bacteriology set-up and media preparation.
- Assists in computer testing and validation procedures.
- Assists in inventory control procedures, including performing a physical inventory, ordering supplies, and receipt of supplies.
- Assists in quality control and quality assurance activities, including those associated with point-of-care testing.
- Performs and verifies point of care tests and CLIA waived laboratory test procedures.
- May perform limited moderate-complex testing such as serum, pregnancy testing, mononucleosis with the appropriate training and documentation.
- Initiates testing on automated analyzers.
- Assists in equipment maintenance.
- Records results on a worksheet when appropriate.
- Prepares slides for microscopic review.
- The laboratory technical assistant does not verify any CLIA non-waived test.
- The laboratory technical assistant shall not offer clinical advice or unauthorized result interpretation.
- The laboratory technical assistant will not evaluate or institute new methods of technology.
- Provides administrative assistance to the technical staff by answering telephones and assisting in clerical duties.
- Maintains a clean and orderly work area.
- Attends continuing education given by supervisors regarding laboratory principles and procedures.
- May be assigned to work in any lab throughout the Reid Health system.
Education & Experience
- Education Required: Minimum of high school diploma or GED
- Education Preferred: Bachelors, Masters, or PhD in chemical, physical, or biological science
- Experience Required: None
- Experience Preferred: Experience in laboratory techniques
- None required at initial time of hire. Would prefer candidate to obtain certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) within three years of date of hire.
