Purpose of Role
The Logistics Coordinator is accountable for executing daily transportation activities required for the timely movement of products across assigned facilities and operations. The role is accountable for shipment scheduling, carrier assignment, shipment tracking, transportation documentation, transportation record maintenance, and communication of shipment status and transportation exceptions. The Logistics Coordinator resolves routine transportation exceptions within established procedures, completes transportation and logistics work assigned by the National Freight Manager, and escalates matters exceeding assigned authority or established procedures to the National Freight Manager.
Areas of Accountabilities
Transportation Execution
- Schedule shipments to meet customer delivery requirements and facility shipping schedules.
- Assign shipments to approved carriers using established routing guides, carrier agreements, and transportation procedures.
- Monitor shipments from scheduled pickup through confirmed delivery.
- Maintain accurate shipment status, routing information, freight charges, accessorial charges, supporting documentation, and transportation exception records in JDE and other designated systems.
- Identify shipments not expected to meet scheduled pickup or delivery requirements and notify affected stakeholders.
- Escalate carrier service failures, expected delivery delays, routing exceptions, capacity shortages, unapproved freight charges, safety concerns, and system failures affecting shipment execution to the National Freight Manager.
Carrier and Shipment Coordination
- Communicate shipment schedules, pickup requirements, delivery requirements, appointment details, shipment status, and transportation exceptions to carriers.
- Apply approved freight rates and routing instructions when arranging transportation services.
- Maintain shipment documentation and carrier records required for shipment execution and freight invoice validation.
- Document carrier service failures and transportation exceptions in designated systems.
- Escalate unresolved carrier service failures, repeated carrier service failures, and transportation exceptions requiring management authorization to the National Freight Manager.
Customer & Operational Support
- Communicate shipment status, expected delivery delays, carrier service failures, and transportation exceptions to Customer Service, Sales, Manufacturing, Planning, Warehouse, and Operations personnel.
- Notify affected stakeholders when shipments are not expected to meet scheduled pickup or delivery requirements.
- Execute established after-hours transportation escalation procedures for assigned shipments requiring monitoring or issue resolution outside normal business hours.
Process Compliance & Continuous Improvement
- Follow documented procedures governing shipment scheduling, carrier assignment, shipment tracking, transportation communication, documentation, and exception escalation.
- Maintain complete and accurate transportation records in JDE and other designated systems.
- Complete transportation and logistics work assigned by the National Freight Manager and deliver assigned outputs within established priorities and required completion dates.
- Escalate matters requiring financial authorization, policy exceptions, carrier agreement interpretation, carrier approval exceptions, or transportation procedure changes to the National Freight Manager.
Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
- Associate degree, bachelor’s degree, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant experience in transportation, logistics, supply chain, or related operations.
- Minimum of two years of experience in transportation, logistics, supply chain, or related operations.
- Working knowledge of transportation operations, carrier processes, freight terminology, and freight documentation.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and ERP/TMS systems; Oracle/JDE experience preferred.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple shipments and competing priorities.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills for internal and external coordination.
- Ability to work independently within established guidelines, resolve routine transportation issues, and escalate exceptions appropriately.
- Willingness to travel approximately 5% to 10%, as required.
