Position Summary
The Environmental Services Technician in the Operating Room (OR) plays a critical role in maintaining a sterile and safe environment to support surgical procedures and patient care. This position ensures that all OR areas are thoroughly cleaned, disinfected, and prepared according to strict healthcare standards and infection control protocols. Working closely with surgical teams and management, the technician helps prevent contamination and reduce the risk of healthcare-associated infections. By performing meticulous terminal cleans, managing equipment and supplies, and upholding infection prevention practices, this role directly contributes to patient safety and operational efficiency within a fast-paced, high-stakes area.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform comprehensive cleaning and disinfection of operating rooms after each surgical case, including walls, floors, lights, tables, equipment, and high-touch surfaces.
- Prepare and maintain the OR environment before, between, and after procedures to ensure a sterile, safe, and comfortable setting.
- Manage handling, and disposal of biohazard and hazardous waste in compliance with infection control and regulatory guidelines.
- Restock and maintain inventory of linens, cleaning agents, PPE, and sterilization materials to support uninterrupted OR operations.
- Transport case carts to designated areas and Sterile Processing after surgery; verify equipment disinfection and docking.
- Monitor warmer temperatures and fluid expiration; report any maintenance issues or safety hazards promptly.
- Document cleaning activities accurately in compliance logs or electronic systems; collaborate with infection control teams as needed.
- Follow hospital safety, hazardous materials, disaster, and infection prevention protocols; maintain confidentiality and comply with HIPAA regulations.
Qualifications
- Education: High School Diploma preferred; ability to read and write English required.
- Certification: American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Providers (required upon hire).
- Experience: Previous clinical experience as CNA, or Surgical Tech preferred.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift 30 lbs and stand for extended periods.
- Exposure to hazardous chemicals, regulated waste, and infectious materials.
- Good vision and hand-eye coordination required.
