What you will do
- Reviews patient's medical record prior to each recording to obtain and record identifying information required for EKG stress test and patient records. Demonstrates knowledge and skills and maintains competencies required to provide care appropriate to age of the patients served within department.
- Informs and explains stress/EKG test purposes and procedures to the patient prior to commencement of testing.
- Administers stress/EKG tests as ordered by physician, consistent with patient care policies and procedures, demonstrated competencies, and with consideration given to risk management, infection control practices, patient safety practices and EKG departmental activities. • Determines proper placement and attaches electrodes to specified areas of patient's body appropriately utilizing EKG equipment. • Performs ECG tracings, signal averaged ECGs. • Applies/removes Holter monitors and ambulatory cardiac monitors including ambulatory blood pressure monitor. • Assists with exercise tolerance testing. • Assist with treadmill testing as needed. • Observes patient, EKG tracings and equipment recognizing and reporting abnormal reactions, events or technically inadequate results. • Ensures accurate documentation in performing and processing all procedures including proper ordering, charging, and computer entry.
- Monitors and records electromotive variations in action of the heart muscle on an electrocardiograph.
- Prepares stress/electrocardiogram for analysis in accordance with established standards and procedures.
- Maintains patient medical records; places EKG/Cardiology tracings in designated location in patient’s medical record. Utilizes patient computer systems to enter and retrieve data maintaining confidentiality at all times.
- Recognizes and corrects technical errors to ensure a clear and accurate recording.
- Confers and works collaboratively with patient/family/hospital staff in a customer responsive and courteous manner, in compliance with iRESPECT standards and promoting patient/customer satisfaction to achieve positive patient outcomes.
- Completes required continuous training and education, including department specific requirements. Responds to problems/opportunities to improve work environment and participates in unit based performance improvement activities which includes committees, monitoring and follow-up.
- Maintains required department records, reports and files. Maintains established department policies, procedures, objectives, compliance/quality improvement, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
- Assists with care and maintenance of department equipment and utilizes supplies in a cost effective manner. Reports malfunction of equipment to supervisor.
- Performs transportation, clerical relief and other duties as required.
- Assists in the orientation and supervision of new staff members and students when they provide patient care, treatment, and services as part of their training.
Qualifications
- High School graduate or equivalent Required and
- Successful completion of an EKG Technician training program or documented on the job training Required and
- Qualified by education, training or experience to work with the neonate, infant, adult and/or geriatric patient population as specialty assignment dictates Required
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Upon Hire Required
- Minimum 2 years experience as an EKG Technician Preferred
