Position Summary

The Care Flight Nurse serves as an integral member of the Care Flight team, responsible for delivering high-quality medical care and safe transport to critically ill or injured patients in both prehospital and interfacility settings. This role also includes ensuring the aircraft, ambulance, and associated equipment rooms are properly stocked and maintained, as well as managing the exchange and restocking of equipment used by REMSA Health partner agencies.

This position has contact with the staff of base hospitals and outlying hospitals; with physicians, public service agencies (fire, police, and highway patrol) and ground ambulance personnel; patients and their families; and with various service groups for public relations and educational purposes.

This position has the authority to determine medical and therapy based on the assessment of the patient in keeping with established protocols; safety decisions involving patient, aircraft and other ground transport equipment; whether or not additional equipment should be taken; in triage, who to transport and setting of priorities; and the care, inventory, and ordering of standard medical supplies.

Within this general framework, this position is accountable for the following functions:

  • Provide documentation of assessment and treatment of patients by completing all necessary follow-up and nursing chart forms.
  • Provide consistent, high quality patient care as outlined by the REMSA Health Standard of Care, Protocols, and accepted local and national treatment doctrines.
  • Responsible for all aspects of patient care from the time of patient contact until transfer to a higher level of care.
  • Provide life support and reduce mortality for patients at the scene or hospital and during transport to a definitive care setting.
  • Provide a catalyst for absolute professionalism, integrity, confidentiality, and competency with patients, their families, the public, other agencies, coworkers, and REMSA management at all times.
  • Responsible for providing accurate documentation for statistical and billing purposes.
  • Provides patient   follow-up to requesting agency on patient status upon arrival and later follow-up on patient’s progress/disposition when available.
  • Performs general inspection and maintenance of equipment utilized to ensure that the equipment is working properly.  This includes restocking, ordering supplies, cleaning and arranging for the repair of all damaged equipment to ensure safety of the crew, patients, and the public.
  • Expedites the return of the aircraft or ground ambulance to service by cleaning and restocking.
  • Provides a smooth and efficient exchange of equipment and user agency equipment.
  • Maintains all required certifications and licenses along with a commitment to self-improvement and learning.
  • Maintain and improve EMS leadership skills by reading books and periodicals, and by attending classes, meetings, and seminars.
  • Exhibits self-motivation, initiative and flexibility while performing routine tasks along with special projects and studies.
  • Provides public education to the community, students, co-workers, base hospitals, outlying hospitals and user agencies. This includes education of safety regarding aircraft and other equipment operations.  
  • Participates in the orientation and training of new crewmembers.
  • Provides feedback to management for improvement of working conditions, patient care, and system performance.
  • Willing to work overtime as necessary.
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications/ Experience Requirements

  • Registered nursing license in Nevada or ability to obtain a Nevada license through state reciprocity.
  • Ability to obtain a State of California Nursing License, and submission of California reciprocity paperwork.
  • Three (3) years critical care nursing experience in an Emergency Room or Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), EMSC, or ENPC certification.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for healthcare providers.
  • Valid Nevada or California Driver’s license.  
  • A clean driving record is mandatory.
  • Experience operating an emergency vehicle a plus.
  • Submission for State of Nevada EMS RN license after hire.
  • Ability to complete REMSA Health/Care Flight orientation and academy.
  • Ability to complete Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP).
  • Ability to complete Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) certification.
  • Must possess excellent written and verbal skills.
  • Ability to make rapid decisions for appropriate care in an uncontrolled, unsupervised and sometimes threatening environment.
  • Self-starter requiring little oversight.
  • Must be adaptable to change and able to function in a team-based management structure.
  • Must be able to report to work at any Care Flight base of operation as scheduled or directed.
