POSITION TITLE: Prevention Specialist – VFHY Grant Funded

THIS POSITION HAS THE UNIQUE OPPROTUNITY TO FOCUS ON EDUCATING LOCAL YOUTH ABOUT SUBSTANCE-USE PREVENTION AS WELL AS GAMBLING PREVENTION.

General Statement Of Responsibilities

This is a FLSA non-exempt grant funded position and contingent upon continued grant support. The incumbent works as part of Prevention Services within the Center for Child and Family Services to provide and implement community-based prevention trainings, programs, and campaigns in addition to supporting the work of local prevention coalitions. The incumbent will work with human service agencies, schools, local jurisdictions, industries, and citizen groups to implement evidence-based practices that increase behavioral health wellness by promoting substance use prevention and mental health wellness at the environmental, community, and individual levels. The Prevention Specialist will follow the strategic prevention framework and Region Ten Prevention Logic Model to evaluate and measure program outcomes by: assessing prevention needs, developing a strategic plan, implementing effective community prevention programs, policies, and practices and evaluating their efforts for outcomes. This position is grant-funded by the Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth to implement school-based substance use prevention curriculums. Length of position is dependent on the life of the grant. The incumbent reports to the Program Manager of Prevention Services. Carrying out the position duties requires participation in formulating and carrying out policies, objectives and programs involving the community, school systems, Region Ten, and other local agencies. The incumbent receives general supervision after specific program objectives have been determined and defined by program administrators. The incumbent exercises sound judgment, is cooperative and maintains confidentiality when performing assigned duties and responsibilities. In carrying out the position duties, the incumbent performs in accordance with applicable professional ethics, licensure standards, school policies and Region Ten policies.

Qualifications

EDUCATION:

  • High School diploma with relevant experience required; OR
  • Associate/Bachelor’s degree with no prior work relevant experience required.
  • Bachelors preferred.

Experience

  • One year of experience that includes the following is required: working with high-risk youth or community members, health promotions and education, the coordinator of events and public outreaching, public speaking and presentations, collaboration with community-based groups OR an equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Two or more years of experience preferred.

Certification/License

  • To ensure the safe and efficient operation of the program, a valid Virginia Driver’s License plus an acceptable driving record as issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles are required.
  • For business use of a personal car, a certificate of valid personal automobile insurance must be provided.

KSAS

Knowledge of: principles, theory and strategies of prevention, training, and treatment in the field of substance addiction, mental health and developmental disorders; community mental health and public health; understanding of racial and economic health disparities; and public-school systems and interagency collaboration. Knowledge of laws and regulations governing substance use and mental and behavioral health helpful.

Skills in: creating and delivering public presentations and trainings; organization, data gathering and tracking; attention to detail; verbal and written communication; report writing and presentation; community advocacy and navigation of community resources; motivational interviewing; program coordination; report writing; personal computers; and keyboarding.

Abilities to: provide prevention/education services to groups, families and individuals on substance use/misuse, mental health and behavioral wellness and provide consultation in these areas to agencies; work independently and within the prevention team; promote positive, collaborative, and professional working relations among program participants, co-workers and community-based stakeholders.

SCHEDULE: Full-time (40 hours per week)
