Position Title: Senior Medical Assistant

JOB DESCRIPTION
Summary/Objective
The Senior Medical Assistant (SMA) works as a liaison between Operations, Physicians and the other staff at their assigned location. The SMA will play an integral part in day to day operations and serve as a role model for others. Medical Assistants perform duties to assist health care professionals in the examination and treatment of patients, including: preparing the patient and the environment for treatment; meeting the communication needs of patients and family; conducting basic diagnostic tests; providing patient care coordination, patient education and clerical/reception functions.
Essential Functions

- Onsite Inventory Management in coordination with the Operations Manager.
- OSHA compliance lead for the location.
- Train and orient new clinical staff.
- Conduct some performance related conversations with subordinate staff.
- Implement best practices and contribute to continuous improvements.
- Greets and takes patients to exam rooms and prepares patient for provider examination. Assist the provider during clinic. Correctly updates patient information in the EMR at each visit.
- Makes sure that all diagnostic tests, hospital reports, and other medical records are available prior to clinic visit to provide quality patient care.
- Prepares biological treatments such as platelet rich plasma (PRP) in a sterile fashion, and assists the physician with sterile harvesting and preparation of bone marrow and adipose (fat) grafts.
- Prepares dextrose prolotherapy and other injectable solutions.
- Maintains organization, cleanliness, and inventory of the exam rooms. Orders supplies as needed.
- Provides cross coverage for other MA's/willingness to travel to other physician offices as requested or needed.
- Maintains workflow in department without direct supervision. Works cooperatively with coworkers, providers, and management. Shares knowledge and insights with co-workers in a constructive manner.
- Maintains inventory management of clinical, injectibles/medications ensuring expiration dates have not passed.
- Obtains patient vital signs and performs phlebotomy on a continuous basis. Responsibly handles and disposes of biohazard waste according to OSHA standards.
- Ensure proper patient information is entered into the ultrasound machine and that ultrasound exams are properly saved in our PACS system.
- Answers incoming calls and handles other office duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Work Environment
This job operates in a clinic environment. This role is routinely exposed to common health care conditions, smells, noises, chemicals and such. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
Physical Demands

The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position, and hours of work and days are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. based on patient scheduling needs.
Travel
Some travel between assigned clinics is required.
Required Education and Experience
High school diploma or equivalent; medical assistant diploma from an accredited vocational institution or a community college course in medical assisting. 5 years of experience in a healthcare clinic setting. Strong computer experience required and EMR experience preferred. Experience with Athena EHR is a plus! Medical terminology and proficient typing skills a must. Orthopedic or medical assistant experience a plus.
