ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the direction of the Fire Training Battalion Chief, the Fire Training Captain will:

 

Training Program Development & Delivery

- Assist with the development, coordination, and delivery of fire training programs, including structural firefighting, wildland, driver/operator, technical rescue, and hazardous materials.

- Develop lesson plans, drills, live fire evolutions, simulations, and scenario-based training.

- Ensure training aligns with NFPA standards, TCFP requirements, RCESD policies, and best practices.

- Maintain accurate training records, rosters, evaluations, and certifications.

 

Instructor & Personnel Supervision

- Supervise and mentor instructors, adjunct instructors, and support personnel assigned to training.

- Evaluate staff skills, competencies, and performance during training and emergency response.

- Provide feedback and corrective training to address deficiencies.

- Collaborate with Company Officers to identify training needs across shifts.

 

Training Operations & Logistics

- Manage day-to-day operations of the training grounds, props, and facilities.

- Ensure training equipment, PPE, and props are inspected, maintained, and serviceable.

- Coordinate scheduling of facilities, apparatus, and personnel for training events.

- Assist in the procurement, inventory, and management of training supplies and equipment.

 

Academy and Onboarding Support

- Assist in the planning and delivery of Firefighter Cadet Academies.

- Serve in a supervisory role for cadets during training until released to shift.

- Participate in recruitment, onboarding, and orientation of new personnel.

 

Performance Improvement & Compliance

- Track and verify TCFP compliance for training hours, certifications, and required skills.

- Conduct after-action reviews, training-based QA/QI, and recommend process improvements.

- Ensure personnel are proficient in operational tasks, safety practices, and departmental SOPs.

 

Administrative Responsibilities

- Assist in the development and implementation of the Annual Training Plan.

- Prepare training schedules, reports, studies, and recommendations for the Battalion Chief.

- Assist with budget recommendations related to training equipment and resources.

- Maintain documentation related to training programs, testing, and evaluations.

 

Collaboration & Public Education

- Coordinate with Company Officers, Battalion Chiefs, and other divisions to support training needs.

- Participate in public safety education, fire prevention, and injury prevention programs.

- Support recruitment, recognition, and career development initiatives.

 

Emergency Response

- Respond to incidents as needed to support operations and ensure safe practices.

- Serve as Incident Safety Officer or fill command roles during training and emergency events.

 

Performs other duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

Required:

- TCFP Advanced Firefighter  

- TCFP Fire Instructor II  

- Minimum 5 years of structural firefighting experience with a career fire department

- Minimum 2 years of instructional or company-level training experience

- Valid Texas Class B (or Class B exempt) driver’s license or ability to obtain

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION

- TCFP Master Firefighter

- TCFP Fire Officer II

- TCFP Fire Instructor III

- TDSHS EMT-Paramedic certification or licensure

- Technical Rescue and/or Hazmat Technician certifications

- Experience supervising instructors or managing training operations

- Associate’s degree or higher in Fire Science, Emergency Management, Education, or related field

 

PREFERRED SKILLS

- Strong leadership and mentorship abilities

- Excellent instructional and presentation skills

- Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate complex training events

- Knowledge of NFPA, TCFP, ICS/NIMS, and fire service best practices

- Strong written and verbal communication skills

- Proficiency in training documentation and record management

- Ability to analyze performance, identify deficiencies, and recommend solutions

- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build trust across ranks and shifts

- Commitment to safety, professionalism, and continuous improvement

 

Salary : $120,000 - $156,573
