ResponsibilitiesField Operations
- Inspect standing water sources (ditches, ponds, storm drains, containers) for mosquito breeding activity
- Apply larvicides and adulticides using sprayers, foggers, and truck-mounted equipment
- Set and retrieve mosquito traps to monitor population levels and species distribution
- Identify breeding hotspots and recommend appropriate control measures
- Maintain and operate field equipment and service vehicles
Surveillance & Data Collection
- Identify and count mosquito species, noting those with higher disease risk
- Record population trends and map activity areas
- Assist with mosquito testing for viruses, as required
- Utilize GIS or tracking software to plan and document treatments
Laboratory Work
- Analyze mosquito samples using microscopes
- Assist in testing for pathogens
- Maintain lab equipment and accurately document results
Public Education & Outreach
- Educate residents on eliminating standing water and preventing mosquito breeding
- Respond to citizen inquiries and complaints regarding mosquito activity
Regulatory & Safety Compliance
- Follow all pesticide application laws, regulations, and safety guidelines
- Properly handle chemicals and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Maintain accurate records of inspections, treatments, and findings
- Coordinate with local and state health departments as needed
Work Environment
- Primarily outdoor work in varying weather conditions, including heat and humidity
- May require early morning, evening, or nighttime hours (peak mosquito activity)
- Involves physical activity such as walking on uneven terrain and lifting equipment
Skills & Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Valid Illinois driver’s license required
- Ability to obtain a General Standards Operator’s License and Applicator’s License from the Department of Agriculture
- Ability to work independently in field settings
- Basic proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel, along with general office tasks
- Strong attention to detail for species identification and data collection
- Comfort working with chemicals and following safety procedures
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills
